Job Description

About the Role The Instrument Place is seeking a skilled Orchestral String Luthier to join our warehouse repair facility. This role focuses on ensuring our extensive inventory of string instruments is in excellent playing condition. Our repair team takes pride in performing high-quality repairs, restorations, and general maintenance on orchestral instruments for school programs, rental fleets, and individual clients. Responsibilities Perform comprehensive repairs, restorations, and routine maintenance on orchestral string instruments (violin, viola, cello, and double bass). Process instruments for rental fleets and school accounts, ensuring a high standard of playability and structural integrity. Utilize inventory and repair management software to track workflow, parts, and account information. Support working partnerships with area school music programs and directors by fulfilling their specific instrument requirements. Provide accurate and timely repair estimates. Maintain updated technical knowledge on luthier tools, techniques, and industry standards. Identify and order necessary repair parts, wood, and supplies as needed. Maintain a safe, clean, and highly efficient workstation. Occasionally consult with clients via phone, email, or scheduled warehouse visits to assess repair needs and explain service options. Work Environment This position operates within a high-volume, craftsmanship-focused warehouse environment, not a retail storefront. The designated repair facility is equipped with open workstations and bright task lighting designed for precision work. Luthiers work both independently and collaboratively in a steady-paced setting where efficiency, safety, and technical professionalism are prioritized. Qualifications Minimum of one year of orchestral stringed instrument repair and setup experience, preferably in a high-volume shop or restoration environment. Completion of an accredited string instrument repair or luthier program is highly preferred. Strong time-management skills with the ability to balance complex restorations with high-volume fleet maintenance. Why The Instrument Place? Working at The Instrument Place means joining a dedicated team of professionals focused on quality craftsmanship and supporting music education. We offer a focused, dedicated workspace where technicians can apply their training to keep music programs and musicians thriving.
