INSTRUMENT & CONTROL TECHNICIAN II
(SENIOR
TECHNICIAN
) Denver, CO Keep critical power generation running by applying your electrical and instrumentation expertise to maintain the control systems that ensure safe, reliable operation of a combined-cycle power plant.
MUST-HAVES
Required Education & Experience (ONE of the following): Two-year technical degree AND minimum 5 years of power plant and/or industrial electrical, instrumentation, or electronics experience OR significant power plant and/or industrial electrical or electronics experience in lieu of degree
Required Technical Knowledge:
Working knowledge of combined-cycle power plant systems, power plant operations, and maintenance Knowledge of electrical principles, work practices, procedures, and materials Ability to interpret electrical and control drawings and P&IDs Knowledge of instrumentation test equipment, signal generators, relay test sets, oscilloscopes, and computers Ability to safely apply lockout tagout process on owned equipment/systems or other equipment Capability to verify absence of voltage on all systems (DC through 125V and AC through 230kV) utilizing appropriate meters or non-contact detectors
Required Skills & Competencies:
Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills Strong mechanical aptitude with advanced understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity, and mathematics Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Basic computer knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various other programs Ability to make maintenance-related decisions with minimum direct supervision
Strongly Preferred:
Experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), various PLC Controllers, CEMS controls and equipment Programming and configuration capabilities Knowledge of industry-related CEM System hardware, software, and reporting
Requirements:
Valid U.S. Driver's license with acceptable MVR history Must be available for night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required Ability to respond promptly to emergency call-outs Willingness to support job responsibilities outside of scheduled work hours Occasional travel may be required
ABOUT THE ROLE
Perform instrument, control, and electrical maintenance functions essential to the safe, environmentally compliant operation of a combined-cycle power plant. You will provide technical and analytical services for control systems and associated equipment (electronic, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic) and electrical maintenance (LV/MV/HV). Reporting to the Operations & Maintenance Manager, you will participate in the plant maintenance program as a system owner and document plant maintenance records in a computer-based work management system, including the Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS).
ELECTRICAL, CONTROLS & INSTRUMENTATION MAINTENANCE
Monitor, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair the plant's electrical, controls, and instrumentation systems as assigned Execute electrical maintenance on equipment less than 600 volts with backup responsibility for greater than 600 volts Troubleshoot various electrical circuits (contactors, motor starters, single phasing on motors, lighting circuits, etc.) Communicate the cause of protective relay trips and repair initiating problems in accordance with NERC standards Wire and unwire motors and other components as needed during outage and other maintenance-related activities Specify and initiate purchase requisitions on assigned systems and equipment
SYSTEM OWNERSHIP & COLLABORATION
Partner on a System Ownership team with other IC&E Technicians, Operations Technicians, Management, and Engineering Support PLC/DCS/Controls programming and troubleshooting, calibration, and system optimization Monitor and review system health indicators and optimize system performance Develop maintenance strategy for each system including budget, spare parts, and outage planning Lead training of systems, labeling, and system procedure development and improvement Update system documentation in plant records and computer-based work management system Present system health presentations to management annually Manage projects for system improvements as needed
PREVENTIVE & CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE
Execute Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Corrective Maintenance (CM) work in a collaborative team manner Conduct job safety briefings (JSB) at turnover and perform quality JSBs for each job Work alongside, assist, or perform minor oversight of contractors, vendors, and other work groups during major overhauls or large equipment maintenance Knowledge of equipment operating limits, parameters, operating procedures, and systems with ability to perform corrective actions if limits are exceeded
EQUIPMENT OPERATION & SAFETY
Operate various mobile equipment including forklifts, skid steers, telehandlers, and similar equipment Function under written operating and maintenance procedures as required by Plant Management Demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making in dynamic plant environments Interact and communicate effectively with individuals across all areas of the company and outside vendors
CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT
Actively participate in training and retraining programs as directed by Plant Management Stay current with industry best practices, safety protocols, and emerging technologies Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence
