Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
The Utilities Cross Connection Technician performs intermediate semi-skilled and skilled work in the installation, repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines, wells, pump stations and appurtenances, the Utility Mechanic also performs all facets of the City's Cross Connection Control Program in accordance with local and state regulations to ensure a safe drinking water supply, Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Water Supervisor or Maintenance and Director of Public Services.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. The City provides reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary functions herein described. Maintains water and sewer lines and appurtenances and responds to and resolves interruptions of service. Makes water and sewer taps and service connections. Repairs and replaces water and sewer lines, pumping stations and related facilities. Unstops lines with a rodding machine, repairs and flushes fire hydrants. Operates trucks, tractors, backhoe, air hammer, tapping machine and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks. Performs general grounds maintenance tasks; excavations and backfills trenches. Installs water meters, fire hydrants and valves. Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination of basic education and intermediate experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of water and sewer lines.

Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
Special Requirements:
Respond to after-hours emergencies, under sometimes inclement weather conditions, as needed. Must have or obtain a state-approved backflow testing certification. If already possessed, the certification must be current. Must obtain a Water Distribution License within eighteen months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, equipment and techniques. Knowledge of English, spelling and arithmetic. Knowledge of the organization and functions of the department and of general administrative policies and practices. Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs for the purposes of creating and editing documents, graphs and spreadsheets. Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of utility lines. Knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of utility lines and appurtenances. Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment plant principles and operating practices. Skill in the use of common hand and power tools. Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing in a highly interactive, team-oriented work environment. Skill in applying mechanical and electrical concepts to diagnose and repair pumps, motors, controls and other related mechanical components. Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals, parts, diagrams, schematics and blueprints. Ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for visual depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus.
