Role Overview IMI Bimba is seeking a motivated and hands-on Engineering & Compliance Intern to support our Engineering and Compliance teams in University Park, IL. This internship provides exposure to CAD modeling, compliance certification workflows, project coordination, and model shop activities. In this role, you will assist with creating and updating CAD models, supporting compliance documentation, preparing certification packages, coordinating small engineering tasks, and helping with prototype builds or fixture preparation in the model shop. This internship is ideal for junior and senior ‑ level engineering students looking to gain hands ‑ on experience in a global organization. You will work closely with engineers, designers, drafters, compliance specialists, Lab technicians and manufacturing teams across the Americas, gaining valuable insight into engineering processes, regulatory requirements, and product development workflows. Depending on IMI's evolving needs and the intern's developing capabilities, additional projects or areas of interest may be assigned to support broader engineering and compliance initiatives. Work Environment On-Site, University Park, IL Key Responsibilities
  • Support compliance certification activities by gathering data, preparing documentation, and assisting with customer or regulatory submissions.
  • Help maintain compliance records, declarations, and supporting evidence for certifications such as RoHS, REACH, PFAS, and material disclosures.
  • Create and revise 2D and 3D CAD models of components and assemblies using Autodesk Inventor and/or SolidWorks.
  • Generate basic drawings and update existing documentation under the guidance of designers and engineers.
  • Assist with Engineering Change Orders and document control activities within PLM systems.
  • Support project coordination tasks, including tracking deliverables, preparing meeting notes, and updating project logs.
  • Collaborate with the model shop to support prototype builds, fixture preparation, testing, and basic machining or assembly tasks.
  • Help organize engineering documentation, drawing archives, templates, and compliance files.
  • Participate in engineering and compliance meetings to understand requirements, priorities, and project expectations.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by the Engineering Manager and/or Engineering Director. Critical Competencies for Success
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Basic experience with 2D/3D CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks preferred).
  • Interest in regulatory compliance, material declarations, and certification processes.
  • Understanding of basic mechanical design principles and manufacturing methods.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn technical documentation standards.
  • Ability to follow instructions, ask clarifying questions, and work collaboratively.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on environment, including model shop or prototype areas.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Self-motivated, organized, and eager to grow in a dynamic engineering environment.
