The program includes hands-on field training, safety instruction, and supervised production work. Advancement to Fiber Optic Splicing Technician status is performance-based and contingent upon demonstrated competency, quality standards, safety compliance, and customer requirements. Job Summary The Apprentice Fiber Optic Splicer supports the installation, splicing, testing, and documentation of fiber optic networks under the direct supervision of a Lead Splicer or Field Supervisor. This role is designed for individuals capable of working in a travel-based field environment while rapidly developing the skills required to perform independent splicing work. Primary Responsibilities & Installation Duties Review and read installation diagrams, construction prints, fiber schematics, splice plans, and route maps. Prepare fiber optic cables for splicing, including stripping, cleaning, cleaving, fiber organization, and tray management. Assist with and progressively perform fusion and mechanical splicing under supervision. Install and dress fiber within splice enclosures, splice trays, patch panels, and termination points. Perform fiber testing tasks such as continuity testing, light source/power meter testing, and OTDR testing (as trained). Accurately label fiber cables, enclosures, trays, and terminations in accordance with project and customer requirements. Tools & Equipment Safely operate and maintain specialized fiber optic tools, including fusion splicers, cleavers, strippers, microscopes, and testing equipment. Maintain clean, contamination-free work environments to protect fiber integrity. Assist with inventory control and proper handling of tools and materials. Procedures, Quality & Progression Follow complex, step-by-step procedures and detailed work instructions. Perform repetitive and precision-based tasks requiring a high level of attention to detail. Demonstrate continuous skill progression toward independent splicing capability throughout the two-month program. Safety & Compliance Comply with all OSHA, company, and customer safety requirements. Properly use required PPE including safety glasses, hard hats, high-visibility vests, gloves, and fall-protection equipment. Follow proper fiber shard handling and disposal procedures. Documentation & Communication Complete daily and weekly production reports and as-built documentation accurately and on time. Communicate job progress, quality concerns, and issues to supervisors and team members. Travel Requirements This position requires extensive travel . Apprentices should expect to be on the road for extended periods , typically 10-14 consecutive days at a time , depending on project needs. 10 on, 4 off. Travel will include overnight stays, out-of-state assignments, and varying job locations. Flexible schedules, long workdays, and weekend work may be required based on project demands. Program Completion & Advancement By the end of the one-month apprenticeship , successful candidates are expected to: Independently perform fiber splicing tasks that meet quality and customer acceptance standards. Set up, splice, test, label, and document fiber installations without direct supervision. Troubleshoot basic fiber issues in the field. Maintain consistent safety compliance and productivity in a travel-based environment. Successful completion may result in advancement to Fiber Optic Splicing Technician , subject to management approval and operational needs. Required Skills & Abilities Ability to read and interpret installation diagrams and technical documentation. Ability to follow complex procedures and perform tedious, precision-based tasks using specialized hand tools. Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work in outdoor environments, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions. Ability to travel extensively for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, and handle tools and materials required for field work. Basic proficiency with mobile devices or tablets for reporting and documentation. Preferred Qualifications Entry-level experience in telecommunications, low-voltage, or construction environments. Familiarity with fiber optic tools or testing equipment (preferred but not required).
