Job Description

This is not a Civil Service Position. DWSD employees are subject to provisions of Court Orders entered in United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan, Southern Division, Case No. 77-71100 with regard to certain terms and conditions of employment. DWSD does not honor reversion rights for internal candidates. SUMMARY:
The Engineering Technician works in a team environment to provide research from various engineering units and outside agencies for the preparation of engineering design drawings, detail drawings, maps, graphs, and as-built plans and any other drawings and information for the purpose of record keeping and development of engineering plans.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provide research from various engineering units and outside agencies for the preparation of engineering design drawings. Review, create and modify complex CADD drawings, maps, graphs for GIS input. Search reference materials and engineering office files and compile information from other departments for use in development of various drawings such as but not limited to: engineering design drawings, detail drawings, maps, graphs, as-built plans. Conduct inspections. Assist with contract management. Assist management with engineering reports and other correspondence. Follow safety policies and procedures in carrying out duties. A valid Michigan Driver's License and the ability to drive a motor vehicle on all terrain. Provide on the job training.

  • Use knowledge of codes, regulations, policies and procedures to do inspections, monitor an observe specialized portions of engineering, construction, maintenance and operations contracts, technical pilot projects, legal and contract compliance requirements
  • Assign and use CADD levels for project mapping data attachment to city base maps and consult and coordinate with department units and other agencies; develop cell libraries and standards for the integration and presentation of project documentation data in CADD
  • Examine and interpret source material, such as tables, contracts, engineering documents, catalogs, contracts, maps, specifications, operations manuals, drawings, office records and other documents for reference in carrying out assignments
  • Create reproductions of blueprints and drawings
  • Conduct inspections
  • Assist with evaluation of consultant design contracts

  • Assist with design issues on construction projects
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
(position requirements at entry)
  • High School Diploma or GED with successful completion of courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • Associate degree in design or engineering technology
  • Completion of advanced training with coursework applicable to engineering or engineering technology work.
  • Two (2) years of experience in technical work that includes CADD operation for engineering, planning or mapping projects, technical project coordination, or other technical work involving the application of the principles, methods and techniques of engineering technology preferred.
  • Five (5) or more years of general work practices or any combination of equivalent skills in public utility or private industry

Environmental Working Requirements:
Work may be performed in plant or office environment. The noise level in this work environment is usually loud. Fieldwork involves exposure to a variety of industrial plant processes and construction sites.
