Join one of the Twin Cities most reputable string music shops with an opportunity to contribute and grow in the music business! All Strings Attached is seeking a Senior Luthier and String Instrument Repair Specialist with an orchestral strings background (violin/viola/cello/bass) and a passion for building, repairing and restoring stringed instruments at all levels. We are looking for mature, organized, motivated, and self-starting individuals to provide excellent set ups, repairs, service, and support to our customer base of local musicians and school rental programs, and to oversee the services of all upper stringed instruments for the store. As a Senior Luthier and String Instrument Repair Specialist, you will play an important role in our continued success at providing musicians and string families high quality instruments and repair services. To be successful in this role you will need several years of violin and viola making, high quality string instrument repair and adjustment expertise, the ability to play violin and viola at an advanced level, and a collaborative approach. In this role you will direct workflow of all violin and viola set ups and repairs, train junior luthiers and music instrument repair specialists and bow makers in the most effective and efficient techniques, oversee the services of all violins and violas in the store, and represent ASA in to the greater Twin Cities community. Working as a member of our leadership team, and with store associates and other instrument repair technicians, you will support the vision of All Strings Attached to be the premier provider of violins, violas, cellos, and basses in the Twin Cities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide an extraordinary experience for all customers, always. 90% Oversee the Set Up and Repairs of All Violins and Violas
- Provide expertise to junior luthiers and instrument repair specialists with regard to the inspection of instruments to locate defects, and to determine their value or the level of restoration required.
- Accurately diagnose instruments for repair and provide written and/or verbal estimates as needed, and showing others how to diagnose repairs.
- Perform instrument set-ups for rental and sales instruments, including high end violins and violas for sale.
- Play instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects and train junior luthiers and instrument repair specialists on the best techniques.
- Adjust string tensions to tune instruments, using hand tools.
- Develop shop specifications and techniques for professional instrument repair, restoration, and set-ups.
- Oversee and train others to string instruments and adjust bridges of instruments to obtain specified string tensions and heights.
- Train others to properly clean and polish instruments. 10% General and Administrative Tasks
- Manage workflow and shop repair commitments.
- Assist Music Store Associates, Leadership and other Associates as needed.
- Attend and represent All Stringed Attached at Luthier workshops, violin- making conferences, school shows, training seminars, etc., as required.
- Maintain organized work area and professional work environment.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience repairing high-end violins, violas, cellos and basses is preferred Minimum of three years of formal training in string instrument repair under an advanced and reputable Luthier, including a string instrument repair diploma or certificate from a reputable school, and letter of recommendation from a well-established, reputable luthier is preferred The ability to play (violin/viola/cello/bass) at an advanced level is preferred Passion for working with stringed instruments Willingness to develop and train others on repair techniques and establish shop specifications Advanced knowledge of woodworking and sharpening tools.
