Job Description

City of Vicksburg Job Title:
Mechanic Summary Repairs and maintains machinery and mechanical equipment such as engines and motors by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned, Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble Works closely with the following departments: Water, Gas, Sewer, Traffic, City Shop, Street, and Fire Department. Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements. Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments. Repairs or replaces defective parts. Installs special functional and structural parts in devices Lubricates and cleans parts. Starts devices to test their performance. Sets up and operates drill press, grinder, and other metal working tools to make and repair parts. Initiates purchase order for parts and machines. Repairs electrical equipment. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Experience:
Associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent from two- year college or technical school; or three to four years' experience and/or training with tractors and small engines; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Computer Skills Knowledge of basic computer skills are needed for this position. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must have valid driver's license. Other Skills and Abilities Must have prior experience with the repair and maintenance of equipment with small engines; Prior experience with the repair and maintenance of automotive engines is preferred. Other Qualifications Must be in good physical shape. Overtime, alternative work schedule and on-call status may be assigned with little or no advanced notice. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
