Fiber Optic Technician

Essential Job Functions Perform and complete installation, troubleshooting, and repair of fiber optic installations. Plan and complete installs for new services and equipment for customers by installing network interface devices, wiring, and wireless gateway routers. Recognize and understand how to configure customer's equipment both residential and commercial. Understand, maintain, and repair existing equipment by using test sets to locate line or equipment trouble and determine necessary repairs. Complete and maintain records as required, including completion of all required information on work orders to ensure details of work are recorded for entry into the customer's account. Conducting regular inspections of the systems with the aim of locating and repairing any defects detected during the inspections. Performing premises cabling and running fiber optic cables underground and aerial. Determining solutions to any problems and issues that are preventing the fiber optic systems from performing optimally. Constructing a proper slice case as well as preparing and maintaining records, diagrams and schematics relating to the splice case. Clean, maintain, and organize stock for company vehicles and prepare equipment to safely perform required duties and reflect the Company's high standards. Provide a high level of customer service, educate customers on the use of products and services, and recommend products and services to meet customer needs. Other duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of electronics and electrical wiring theory, principles, and practices. Knowledge of electronic and electrical safety standards, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of reading schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of using testing and detection instruments and devices. Knowledge of using hand and power tools. Knowledge of using various test equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot communications equipment malfunctions. Knowledge of detecting and locating underground utilities. Skill in using standard fiber optic preparation and splicing equipment, and OTDRs. Ability to work independently and/or within a team. Ability to perform aerial vehicle operations. Ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires/cables.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent education required. Experience in specialized technical courses or equivalent work experience a plus. Any certifications a plus (Copper/Fiber Splicing certificate or Access Equipment certificate). Experience with routers, switches, wirelesses networking and IP addressing. Direct on-the-job experience with installation, termination, splicing, testing, certification and documentation of fiber optic cabling and associated infrastructure. Good problem solving and analytical ability. Good organizational skills and attention to details. Two to five years of experience with telecom and/or internet installations and maintenance. Valid or ability to obtain an Ohio driver's license and acceptable driving record.
