Job Description

A traveling fiber optic technician installs, splices, tests, and repairs fiber optic cables across various locations for multiple MDU builds, ensuring high-speed data transmission. They work extensively on telecommunications networks, including aerial, underground, and indoor cabling. This role requires traveling to job sites, often with overnight stays, frequent lifting of up to 70 pounds, and operating in all weather conditions
Key Responsibilities Splicing & Termination:
Perform precision fusion splicing, fiber preparation, and termination of loose tube fiber optic cables.
Testing & Troubleshooting:
Use OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) and power meters to test network performance and resolve connectivity issues.
Installation:
Install, route, and secure fiber cables, patch panels, and cabinets in residential or commercial environments.
Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance on existing systems to minimize disruptions.
Documentation:
Complete detailed closeout documentation, including as-built prints and splicing records.
Required Skills and Qualifications Experience:
Generally 2+ years of experience with fiber optic splicing and testing.
Technical Knowledge:
Proficiency in using fiber prep tools, fusion splicers, and fiber testers.
Physical Stamina:
Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and work in confined spaces, on ladders, or in bucket trucks.
Certifications:
Knowledge of fiber optic standards, sometimes requiring industry certifications.
Travel:
Willingness to travel frequently, often for weeks at a time. Common Job Requirements Valid driver's license and clean driving record. Ability to work in all weather conditions and on-call. Background check and drug screen. Typical pay rates vary based on experience, often ranging from per hour, though specialized roles can be higher, with many jobs offering per diem and travel incentives.

From $60,000.00 per year
