Wastewater Pumping Station Mechanic Date:
June 3, 2026 Position Overview The Town of Chapin Utilities Department is seeking a skilled and dedicated Wastewater Pumping Station Mechanic to join our team. This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of wastewater pumping stations, with a strong emphasis on the upkeep and troubleshooting of mechanical systems and electrical controls. The role ensures efficient and reliable service in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations by maintaining pumps, motors, valves, and the critical electrical control systems that regulate station operations. The Wastewater Pumping Station Mechanic plays an essential role in safeguarding the town's wastewater management infrastructure, ensuring public health, environmental safety, and operational excellence through diligent care of both mechanical and electrical components.
Key Responsibilities Maintenance and Repair :
Perform routine and emergency maintenance on wastewater pumping station equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, pipes, and electrical control systems. Diagnose and repair mechanical failures and electrical control issues, such as wiring, relays, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), to ensure uninterrupted system performance.
Electrical Control Maintenance :
Regularly inspect, test, and repair electrical control panels, sensors, and automation systems integral to pump station operations, addressing faults in circuitry or programming to maintain optimal functionality.
Inspection :
Conduct thorough inspections of pumping stations, including detailed assessments of electrical controls, to identify potential issues, ensure proper functioning, and verify compliance with safety and operational standards.
Preventive Maintenance :
Implement preventive maintenance schedules for both mechanical equipment and electrical control systems to extend equipment lifespan, reduce system failures, and enhance reliability.
Troubleshooting :
Respond to alarms, malfunctions, or system failures, utilizing diagnostic tools and technical expertise to resolve mechanical breakdowns and electrical control anomalies efficiently.
Record Keeping :
Maintain accurate logs of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs, including specific documentation of electrical control system performance and interventions. Submit reports as required by the Utilities Department.
Safety Compliance :
Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout procedures for electrical systems, and confined space entry regulations.
Collaboration :
Work closely with other Utilities Department staff, including operators, supervisors, and external contractors, to coordinate repairs and upgrades to both mechanical and electrical control systems.
Additional Repair Services :
Assist other maintenance staff and conduct repairs to water mains, sewer mains, and additional Utilities infrastructure as required, leveraging mechanical and electrical expertise to ensure system-wide reliability.
Inventory Management :
Monitor and maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and electrical components necessary for pumping station maintenance and control system repairs.
Emergency Response :
Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to after-hours emergencies, addressing mechanical and electrical control issues to ensure continuous operation of wastewater systems.
Qualifications Education :
High school diploma or GED required. Completion of a technical or vocational program in mechanical systems, electrical controls, wastewater technology, or a related field is preferred.
Experience :
Minimum of 2 years of experience in the maintenance and repair of wastewater pumping stations, industrial machinery, or similar systems, with demonstrated expertise in servicing electrical control systems.
Certifications :
Possession of a valid South Carolina Driver's License. South Carolina Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification (Level D or higher) is preferred.
Skills :
Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills, with a focus on pumps and motors. Advanced proficiency in maintaining and repairing electrical control systems, including wiring, relays, PLCs, and automation components. Knowledge of wastewater pumping systems, including centrifugal pumps, hydraulic systems, and their associated electrical controls. Familiarity with SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and their integration with pumping station electrical controls is a plus. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, blueprints, and control system documentation. Competency in electrical troubleshooting, including the use of multimeters and diagnostic tools for control system repairs.
Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks in varying weather conditions. Must be able to stand, bend, and climb as needed to access equipment and electrical control panels. Work Environment The Wastewater Pumping Station Mechanic will work primarily outdoors at various pumping station sites throughout the Town of Chapin, with exposure to wastewater, chemicals, noise, and potentially hazardous conditions, including electrical hazards associated with control systems. This position requires availability for on-call duty and occasional overtime to address emergencies or critical maintenance needs related to mechanical and electrical systems.
Compensation and Benefits Salary :
$48,000 to $58,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
Town Vehicle :
A dedicated Town-owned vehicle will be provided for work-related travel and on-call responsibilities, including commuting between pumping station sites and emergency response duties.
