Responsibilities Operates instrumentation and/or equipment that measure and control level, temperature, pressure, flow, force, power, position, motion, physical properties, chemical composition and other process variables within the water/wastewater system. Assists in the installation, calibration and commissioning of all types of water/wastewater process control instrumentation and equipment. Monitors and makes periodic and special inspection of water/wastewater process control instrumentation to determine operating condition and perform preventative maintenance. Makes routine and assists with complex diagnostics to analyze problems associated with process control instrumentation, control systems, programmable logic controllers and telemetry systems using test equipment, simulators and software applications as required. Assists with routine complex equipment modifications to implement required design changes. Reads, interprets, modifies, and updates blueprints, schematics, ladder logic and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (PID) diagrams to troubleshoot, repair, or modify equipment, and to accurately reflect current operating systems. Troubleshoots and provides solutions to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system malfunctions by using the Human Machine Interface (HMI) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) software. Assists in the planning and establishing of work schedules and instrument maintenance programs. Documents all the maintenance records of the instrumentation used in the water/wastewater plants and water distribution system. Works as scheduled including nights, weekends, and holidays. Completes other job duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associates Degree in Instrumentation, Electronics or related field, from an accredited institution and one (1) year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and adjustment of water/wastewater plant instruments; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Senior Instrument Technician:
In addition to the above, requires an additional year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and adjustment of water/wastewater plant instruments; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Education & Experience Requirements Basic knowledge of the chemical and physical treatment procedures employed in the treatment of water/wastewater. Basic knowledge of the principles and practices pertaining to the installation and adjustment of water/wastewater plant instruments. Basic knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, as well as chemical, biological, electrical and mechanical hazards. Basic knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Basic knowledge of low and medium voltage switchgear and Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) system as related to a water/wastewater plants. Basic knowledge of symbols and standard practices as related to the process control & instrumentation industry. Basic knowledge of computer equipment such as Ethernet Switches, Firewalls, Servers and communication cables and accessories. Basic knowledge of telemetry equipment such as serial/Ethernet data radios, antennas, communication cables and accessories. Basic knowledge of motor control systems including Pump/Motor Controllers, Reduced Voltage Soft Starts and Variable Frequency Drives. Skill in the installation and adjustment of water/wastewater plant instruments and equipment. Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment pertaining to the installation and adjustment of instruments. Skill in the installation and adjustment of telemetry equipment and accessories. Skill in the installation and configuration of software programs utilized in the SCADA system. Computer skills working with Microsoft Office programs. Ability to maintain and operate equipment used in the treatment of water/wastewater. Ability to inspect and analyze water facility instruments to detect flaws or defects in their operation and to make necessary corrective adjustments. Ability to keep records and to prepare reports of routine examinations. Ability to read and interpret wiring schematics, PID drawings and prints. Ability to interpret equipment and Operations & Maintenance manuals. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver's License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy. Must be able to work with a self-contained breathing apparatus weighing 45 lbs., or respirator. Must pass the annual fit test requirements for use of a self-contained breathing apparatus and/or respirator. Must be able to enter and perform duties in a confined space.
