Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Firestop Technician Installer to join our fire testing laboratory team. This is a hands-on position ideal for individuals with a construction background who are interested in transitioning into specialized technical work in a controlled lab environment. In this role, you will construct and install firestop systems that support fire endurance testing, contributing to the development of safer building products and practices. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with engineers and technicians to enhance new firestop systems, conduct research, and utilize reference libraries—including the UL Product iQ directory, internal resources, and third-party documentation. This is a full-time position that requires daily presence at our Fire Test Lab in Central Houston during normal business hours. Key Responsibilities:
Install firestop assemblies according to test plans, UL standards, and life safety drawings Accurately measure, cut, and assemble materials using hand and power tools Work with a variety of materials including drywall, mineral wool, sealants, pipe insulation, and metal framing Set up and break down test frames and fire-rated assemblies Maintain clear and accurate documentation for each test setup Collaborate with lab engineers and team members to evaluate and improve firestop systems Conduct research using the UL directory, internal documentation, and industry libraries Follow all lab procedures and safety protocols diligently Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to read tape measures, technical drawings, and life safety schematics Basic computer skills for documentation and communication (e.g., Microsoft Word, Outlook) Able to lift and carry 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in carpentry, drywall, firestopping, or insulation installation Skills and Competencies:
Solid understanding of construction tools, materials, and best practices Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment Strong organizational skills and a commitment to quality workmanship Good close-range vision for precision tasks Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a warehouse and laboratory environment. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud in the lab with testing equipment running as well as in the warehouse with heavy equipment running.
This includes variable outside conditions such as extreme heat or cold. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands and fingers to type or dial, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position requires computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Benefits:
