Job Description

Perform paraprofessional engineering and drafting work in the office or field. The Traffic Engineering Intern will primarily work in the Traffic Management Center (TMC) with the traffic control and timing software. The applicant will need to be able to monitor numerous video displays, communicate effectively with emergency services, and program management software simultaneously. Work hours will be between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Essential Functions:
Prepare technical drawings, plans, and update maps and engineering documents utilizing knowledge of drafting principles and equipment; Performs engineering field work as a member of a survey crew. Assists in setting stakes. Assists in taking instrument readings using levels, transits, and other survey equipment; Gathers data for engineering projects and special studies. Assists in the preparation of reports; Assists in the preparation of construction estimates and contract documents, and assists engineering personnel in the inspection of contract work for compliance to plan; Maintains records and logs of engineering projects; May assist in the training and supervision of engineering technicians; Operates business computer and software to maintain a variety of data. May use computer-assisted drafting programs to prepare engineering drawings; Perform related duties as required.

Two years of college involving engineering-related coursework or equivalent, or any combination of education and experience that provides the following:
Valid Current Commercial Driver's License Knowledge and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Basic computer operations and computer-assisted drafting.
Ability to:
Prepare engineering drawings and reports; Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement to operate a vehicle; Communicate effectively with others; Equipment used: computer, typewriter, adding machine, measuring tape, surveying instruments, hand tools, binoculars, copy machine, drafting instruments, engineering scales, microfiche reader, telephone, camera, calculator, lab testing equipment, and drawing tools. Physical Requirements Frequently lift and carry up to 10 pounds; Occasionally lift and carry up to 25 pounds; Frequently stand, bend, kneel, and walk during the shift; Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, poles and inclined surfaces; Occasionally flex the upper trunk forward and at the waist, and partially flexing the knees; Occasionally rotate the upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing; Place arms above, at, or below shoulder height.
