Clean, splice, repair (break/fix), manage, test, and occasionally remove fiber-optic cabling. Perform optical and electronic acceptance tests; diagnose and resolve problems identified during testing. Determine and/or follow methods and sequence of operations in performing these operations. Routinely update the documentation of the University's fiber-optic network infrastructure. Work under general supervision.

Responsibilities Install (air-blown and traditional), troubleshoot, clean, terminate, splice, repair (break/fix), provide final system testing, and occasional removal of fiber optic cabling for outside and inside fiber-optic cable plant. Install cabinet, MDF, IDF, TDU, floor mount rack, and wall mount rack including racking and removal of equipment. Use provided database tool(s) and field knowledge to aid in the creation of new pathways. Coordinate install with stake holders and fiber technicians. Use OTDR, OLTS, VFI/VFL, OPM, inspection microscope, etc. to test and analyze fiber network to ensure contiguous communication, network integrity, and quality. Maintain optical equipment; calibrate test equipment. Provide preventive maintenance for fiber network. Interpret engineering documentation including schematics, fiber management systems, and performance OTDR reports. Comply with University and industry fiber-optic and cabling standards. Complete work in locations throughout the main campus, Hospital, Research Park and some off-campus locations. Using various computer-based programs, maintain documentation of time worked (daily activity), track materials and labor, update fiber network changes and upgrades, vehicle logs, and compose clear and concise reports as requested. Some after hour work I necessary (including weekend and holiday).
- Perform on-call rotation as required.
Requires ability to be on Campus within 1 hour . Minimum Qualifications Voice and Data wiring: Three years full-time work or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) installing and terminating voice and data unshielded twisted cable, a basic knowledge of building design with an understanding of horizontal distribution required, the ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license. Strong computer skills preferred.
Telephone Installation and Repair:
Three years full-time work or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), experience working with electronic key systems, a working knowledge of Centrex services, a working knowledge of PBX systems, overhead paging systems, and ACD systems, strong computer skills on windows operating system also required. The ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license. Familiarity with Remedy trouble ticket system preferred.
Fiber Optic cabling:
Three years full-time work or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) installing, testing and repairing fiber optic cabling and terminations, a working knowledge and experience using all fiber optic testing equipment and all types of fiber connectors and terminations, experience in fusion splicing and strong computer skills including Excel required. The ability to distinguish colors and a working knowledge of Category 5 and 6 standards (EIA/TIA standards) and demonstrated human relations and effective communications skills are also required. Must possess a valid Utah drivers license. A working knowledge of AutoCAD and GIS preferred. Preferences Familiarity with air-blown fiber techniques. Light Brigade (or similar) FOC certification(s).
