JOB DESCRIPTION ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN ENGINEERING NEWPORT NEWS, VA CITY OF OPPORTUNITY

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, this position performs basic labor and skilled work to install, maintain, and repair the physical, electrical, and electronic components of all City owned traffic signal equipment and streetlights. Reports to an Electronic Specialist.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Responsible for ensuring the proper function of all City owned traffic signal equipment and streetlights. Assets maintained may be at ground level, underground, and/or overhead. Assembles, adjusts, replaces, and repairs traffic signal heads, cabinets and streetlights. Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains programmable logic controllers (PLCs), battery backup systems, computer networking equipment, and fiber optic networks. Adjusts, calibrates, aligns, and modifies programming of components and records effects on unit performance. Installs and repairs electrical and fiber optic conduit above and below ground level. Searches and marks location of underground signal equipment. Responds to after-hours emergencies to repair and/or mitigate problems related to signs, traffic signals, and streetlight equipment. Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, especially those related to overhead utility lines, traffic, and underground utilities. Deploys and retrieves work zones according to the Work Area Protection Manual (WAPM) and Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); flags traffic in work zones as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Electrical & Electronics
  • Knowledge of theory and practice including materials, diagrams and methods used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric and electronic control devices.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma and 2 years of related experience in the electrical or electronics field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. College or technical school course work in electrical theory and electronics desired.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements and an acceptable driving record. Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment. Requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation; pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. The position is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations. After-hours and weekend standby shifts will be assigned on a rotating basis for on-call emergency response. Required to report to office within 45 minutes of call while on standby. REQUIREMENTS
Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate, though not constant, physical effort. Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of heavy weight ranging from 50-100 pounds on an occasional basis.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, depth, textures, sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, laser/radio frequencies, or traffic hazards.
