Design Technician Job Description We are seeking a motivated Entry-Level Distribution Designer / Field Engineer to support electric utility distribution projects. The role involves assisting in the design, inspection, and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution systems while gaining hands-on experience in both office-based engineering and field operations. Responsibilities Support the detailed design of overhead and underground electric distribution systems, including preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates. Assist with the development and modification of engineering drawings, construction packages, calculations, and reports. Conduct field data collection using tablets, GPS, and other electronic devices to support engineering design and system documentation. Perform field inspections and technical services, including pole inspections (ground-line and mid-span), pad-mounted equipment inspections, joint-use audits and permitting support, and lighting and asset inventories. Utilize and maintain project documentation including photos, field notes, databases, and file management systems in accordance with company and client standards. Develop working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), utility construction standards, and engineering best practices, as well as telecommunications and joint-use infrastructure. Collaborate with engineers, designers, and field personnel to ensure quality, schedule, and production goals are met. Communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and external agencies through written reports, email, and verbal updates. Support continuous improvement by contributing ideas and maintaining strong attention to detail and data accuracy. Perform other duties as assigned. Essential Skills Electrical knowledge Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar design software Drafting and distribution design skills Understanding of power distribution GIS and construction knowledge Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field 1+ years of experience in electric utility, telecommunications, or field engineering Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Exposure to engineering or GIS-related software tools Work Environment The position is based in Cedar Rapids, IA, and involves a combination of field work and office-based design. The work may include exposure to various weather conditions and terrain. Use of company equipment is required for inspections, measurements, and data collection. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
