Job Description:
Controls Engineer This Controls Engineer role focuses on designing, programming, and troubleshooting industrial automation systems, with a strong emphasis on PLC programming, electrical and software design, and on-site customer support. The position offers the opportunity to work on complex automated equipment, contribute to high‑visibility automotive and industrial projects, and grow to the next level of your engineering career within a stable, project-rich environment. Essential Skills Proficiency in PLC programming, including developing Allen-Bradley PLC programs from scratch. Experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms, including configuration, modification, and troubleshooting. Ability to perform PLC design for automated systems and industrial machinery. Experience with Siemens PLC programming from scratch. Hands-on troubleshooting skills for automated equipment and control systems, both in-house and at customer sites. Ability to apply fundamentals of electricity for diagnostics, including measuring and interpreting electrical values. Strict adherence to LOTO and safety procedures while working on electrical and mechanical systems. Working knowledge of national and international standards such as
NFPA 79, NFPA
70E, and UL 508A. Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical, including maintaining libraries, parts databases, and electrical design inventories. Ability to read and navigate mechanical layouts in AutoCAD and SolidWorks. Experience with EPLAN for electrical design, including maintaining symbol libraries and parts databases. Ability to design and document feeder and branch circuits in accordance with UL requirements. Capability to produce engineering drawings that document SCCR calculations. Experience designing industrial networks that comply with relevant governing standards. Ability to calculate and design for environmental conditions such as ambient temperature, ingress protection, and varying voltage supplies. Competence in researching, selecting, and applying sensors, communication technologies, and control devices for motion control, position sensing, pressure sensing, and communication. Experience programming automated tasks to meet project contract requirements and process specifications. Ability to configure local and remote I/O and ensure update rates meet machine process demands. Experience designing interlocks, alarms, and failure-mode responses in control software. Ability to develop user interfaces that are easy to read and navigate. Strong documentation skills for both hardware and software designs. Willingness and ability to travel approximately 20% of the time for customer-facing installation and troubleshooting work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with FANUC robotics programming and integration. Experience with Siemens PLCs in addition to Allen-Bradley platforms. Familiarity with RSLogix and related Rockwell Automation software tools. Experience using SYSTEMA for verification of safety functions and performance levels. Experience in the automotive industry or with automotive automation projects is a strong plus, though industrial machine experience is the primary focus. Experience in automated testing, automotive design, or broader industrial automation environments. Ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical engineers, applications engineers, and cross-functional project teams. Strong customer-facing skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and build positive working relationships. Desire to grow into higher-level engineering responsibilities and take ownership of increasingly complex projects. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $118000.00 - $135000.00/yr. including medical, dental, vision, FSA/HSA options, and life insurance Workplace Type This is a fully onsite position in Wheeling,IL.
