Full Job Description Job Title:
Controls Engineer Job Description This position sits within the Research and Development Engineering division of a global leader in magnet wire, supporting innovative automation projects across automotive, energy, industrial, commercial, and residential applications. The Controls Engineer manages projects from concept through implementation, focusing on the design, programming, and integration of new control systems and automated equipment. The role combines hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting with electrical design, cross-functional collaboration, and the deployment of new technologies and processes, rather than day-to-day factory support or reactive maintenance. Responsibilities Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC applications, primarily using Allen-Bradley platforms, with additional work on Siemens and Omron systems. Develop and modify electrical panel layouts and detailed electrical schematics using AutoCAD Electrical. Plan and execute control system projects, including defining scope, timelines, and deliverables, and tracking progress to completion. Work cross-functionally with other engineering disciplines, skilled trades, and project managers to ensure successful integration of new equipment and processes. Provide technical support for new industrial automated machinery, including commissioning, start-up, and optimization. Integrate machinery and control systems into the Ignition platform and other SCADA environments as required. Interface with internal and external technical resources to identify, specify, and procure components and parts for control systems and automation projects. Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues, including PLC logic, HMI functionality, communication networks, and electrical hardware problems. Contribute to the design and implementation of control system architectures, including control system design, machine communication, and Ethernet networking. Support projects involving medium-voltage equipment such as transformers, switchgears, and switchboards, ensuring proper control and protection interfaces. Document control system designs, modifications, and standards, maintaining accurate and up-to-date drawings and configuration records. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within R D and production environments. Essential Skills Associate degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Engineering, or a closely related field. At least 5 years of hands-on programming and troubleshooting experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs. At least 5 years of experience using AutoCAD or AutoCAD Electrical to design electrical panels and create detailed electrical schematics. Strong background in control systems engineering, including control system design and implementation. Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting, including diagnosing and correcting logic, I/O, and communication issues. Experience with HMI programming and support for industrial automation systems. Solid understanding of electrical systems and components used in industrial control panels and automated machinery. Experience with SCADA platforms, preferably Ignition, for monitoring, control, and data acquisition. Familiarity with Ethernet networking and machine communication in industrial environments. Demonstrated project management experience within automation or controls engineering projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with Siemens and Omron PLCs and related automation platforms. Experience integrating machinery and control systems into Ignition or other SCADA systems. Exposure to medium-voltage systems such as transformers, switchgears, and switchboards. Experience working with Rockwell Automation hardware and software beyond core PLC functions. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including engineering, skilled trades, and project management. Strong troubleshooting mindset with the ability to resolve complex electrical and control system issues in the field and in the office. Excellent documentation skills for electrical drawings, control narratives, and project records. Strong organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple concurrent projects in a project-based environment.
