Job Title:
Controls Engineer Job Description The Controls Engineer will design, program, and support automated control systems in a high-volume automotive glass manufacturing facility. This role focuses on PLC and HMI programming, motion control, and electrical design for new and existing equipment, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production lines. Responsibilities Design and oversee the build of control panels for new projects, ensuring they meet operational and safety requirements. Create new control systems for automated equipment and production processes. Integrate and commission new and legacy equipment into existing production lines. Program and design automated equipment using PLCs, HMIs, and motion control systems. Read, interpret, and create electrical diagrams to support installation, troubleshooting, and modifications. Troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, drives, and related automation components to resolve production issues and improve reliability. Work in full compliance with all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations. Collaborate with production and maintenance teams to optimize equipment performance and uptime. Support continuous improvement initiatives by implementing control system enhancements and upgrades. Communicate effectively with colleagues across different shifts to ensure smooth handoffs and consistent equipment performance. Essential Skills Associate degree in Engineering. 5+ years of experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLCs, including PLC-5, RSLogix 500, and Studio 5000. Hands-on experience programming and troubleshooting PLC-based control systems. Experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley motion control, including AC and DC drives. Experience with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley HMI platforms, specifically FactoryTalk View. Proficiency in electrical design and the ability to read and create electrical diagrams. Strong controls engineering experience in an automation environment. Experience with HMI development and integration. Ability to troubleshoot automation equipment, including robotics, furnaces, ovens, presses, cutting lines, conveyors, and vision systems. Ability to work safely and follow all safety rules and regulations. Effective communication skills to coordinate with cross-functional teams and other shifts. Additional Skills & Qualifications AutoCAD Electrical experience. Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Experience with ABB and Fanuc robotics. Familiarity with Glasstech furnaces, Casso Solar ovens, presses, Bando cutting lines, and conveyor systems. Experience working with Keyence and Cognex vision systems. Experience in high-volume manufacturing, preferably automotive or similar industrial environments. Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset. Work Environment This role is based in a factory environment within an automotive glass manufacturing facility that utilizes extensive automation, including approximately 42 industrial robots (primarily ABB with some Fanuc), Glasstech furnaces, Casso Solar ovens, presses, Bando cutting lines, multiple conveyor systems, and Keyence/Cognex vision systems. Control systems are predominantly Texas Instruments PLCs with a smaller portion of other platforms. The Controls Engineer will work on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, with negotiable but consistent hours. Occasional weekend work may be required to support production or project needs. The role involves regular presence on the plant floor around operating machinery, requiring appropriate safety attire as provided or specified by the facility. The position offers a stable schedule with minimal overtime and no travel, and includes paid time off and paid holidays during the contract period. Collaboration and clear communication with other shifts, including second shift, are an important part of the work environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Shelbyville, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $38.46 - $50.48/hr.
