Full Job Description PURPOSE:
The Level 1 Electrician (Mastery Level) is a highly skilled professional responsible for the safe, reliable installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electrical systems across refinery operations. This role serves as a technical expert, providing leadership, mentorship, and direction to other electricians and contractors while ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex electrical systems, including: High and low voltage systems Motors, compressors, and critical rotating equipment Switchgear, substations, and motor control centers (MCCs) Distributed Control Systems (DCS) interfaces and field wiring Lead and execute critical maintenance and turnaround activities Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior electricians and apprentices Plan and coordinate electrical work with operations, engineering, and contractors Read and interpret advanced electrical drawings, one-lines, loop diagrams, and specifications Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, including: Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Arc flash and electrical safety boundaries Hazardous area classification requirements Perform equipment inspections and predictive/preventive maintenance Identify reliability issues and recommend improvements Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and incident investigations Verify quality and compliance of contractor electrical work
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES
High school diploma or GED Completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship or equivalent industrial experience Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent experience Extensive experience in industrial or refinery electrical maintenance
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES
Two-year associate's or technical degree in maintenance preferred NCCER or equivalent advanced electrical certification Experience with refinery-specific systems and processes Working knowledge of instrumentation and controls Experience with SAP or CMMS systems
COMPETENCIES
Advanced knowledge of: Electrical theory and application AC/DC systems, power distribution, and motor controls Hazardous (classified) locations (Class I, Div 1 & 2) Electrical codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70/NEC, NFPA 70E) Demonstrated ability to: Troubleshoot complex electrical and control systems independently Lead jobs and coordinate multi-discipline work Make sound decisions in high-risk environments Strong leadership and mentoring skills Excellent communication and coordination abilities Demonstration of Calumet Values - Safety, Environment & Social Responsibility, Teamwork, Ownership, Passion for Customers, and Excellence Role Expectations (Mastery Level) Works independently with minimal supervision Serves as a subject matter expert in electrical systems Leads by example in safety, compliance, and craftsmanship Coaches and develops less experienced personnel Drives reliability and continuous improvement initiatives
