Electrical Engineer / Protection & Controls ( Relay Focused) Electrical Engineer Elkton, Maryland Contract to Permanent Mar 23, 2026 Job Summary An energy generation organization is hiring an Electrical Engineer - Protection & Controls (Relay Focus) to support a generator replacement project at a power generation facility in Wilmington, DE. This role is responsible for developing, configuring, and validating protective relay settings, as well as ensuring system protection schemes are properly designed and implemented for high-voltage applications. The position supports both engineering design and field execution activities, including commissioning and troubleshooting. Responsibilities Develop, review, and implement protective relay settings for power generation and high-voltage systems Perform relay coordination studies to ensure system reliability and protection selectivity Configure and test digital relays (e.g., SEL, GE, ABB or similar) Support protection schemes including line protection, motor protection, generator protection, and ground fault protection for high-voltage systems Conduct short circuit, load flow, and coordination studies using tools such as ETAP, SKM, or Aspen Support commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protection systems Collaborate with project teams, field technicians, and plant operations Ensure compliance with applicable standards (IEEE, NEC, NERC, etc.) Travel to the project facility within approximately two hours as needed Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering 5+ years of experience in power systems, protection & controls, or relay engineering Hands-on experience with protective relays and relay settings development Strong understanding of high-voltage power systems, protection schemes and coordination, and fault analysis and system modeling Ability to travel to the project facility as needed
Preferred:
Experience in power generation or utility environments Familiarity with generator protection schemes Professional Engineer (PE) license Experience with major relay manufacturers (SEL, GE Multilin, ABB)
