Job Description

Senior Controls Engineer Nottingham, MD $90,000-$120,000Position OverviewWe are seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to design, develop, and commission control systems for industrial automation projects. The role focuses on PLC/HMI development, PID loop tuning, electrical circuit design and troubleshooting, and DC system integration. The ideal candidate will drive technical solutions from concept through start-up, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure reliable, safe, and efficient plant operations.

Key ResponsibilitiesLead the design, programming, and implementation of PLC-based control systems (development, testing, deployment, and commissioning).Develop and tune PID control loops to optimize process performance and stability.

Design, review, and troubleshoot electrical control circuits, schematics, and wiring diagrams for control panels and field devices.

Integrate and support DC power distribution and DC-driven components within control systems.

Create and maintain
HMI/SCADA
graphics, alarms, and operator interfaces to support safe and effective operations.

Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and support on-site startup and commissioning activities.

Develop technical documentation including control narratives, I/O lists, functional specifications, and wiring diagrams.

Collaborate with mechanical, process, and instrumentation engineers to define control strategies and resolve technical issues.

Mentor and guide junior controls engineers and technicians, providing hands-on training and code reviews.

Apply industry standards and safety practices (e.g., NFPA70, IEC, OSHA) to ensure compliance and maintain a safe working environment.

QualificationsBachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field (or equivalent experience).Minimum 5+ years of experience in industrial controls engineering, with proven experience in PLC programming and system integration.

Hands-on experience with PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or similar) and ladder/structured/textual programming languages.

Demonstrated expertise in PID control design and tuning for continuous and batch processes.

Strong knowledge of electrical control circuits, schematics, relay logic, and wiring practices.

Experience with DC systems, including DC power supplies, distribution, motors, and drives.

Familiarity with
HMI/SCADA
platforms, instrumentation, fieldbus/industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus), and diagnostics.

Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with experience performing commissioning and start-up activities.

Effective communication skills and experience working in cross-functional teams; ability to produce clear technical documentation.
Preferred:
Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant certifications, experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS), and prior experience in manufacturing, oil & gas, utilities, or process industries.
