Job Title:
Controls EngineerJob Description This role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining industrial control systems to support reliable and safe operations in a production environment. The Controls Engineer will own and manage electrical and control system documentation, lead PLC programming and troubleshooting activities, and support field execution by developing clear instructions and drawings. This position offers a long-term opportunity to gain experience in an industry different from automotive, with bonus potential based on performance. Responsibilities + Translate field wiring into detailed electrical drawings and ensure accuracy and completeness of documentation. + Own, consolidate, and maintain all electrical drawings, including updates and revisions as systems evolve. + Review, evaluate, and implement electrical control change requests from operations, ensuring safe and effective solutions. + Generate clear instructions and drawings (DRWs) to guide field execution of electrical and control work. + Own and maintain the facility's single-line diagrams, ensuring they remain current and accurate. + Serve as the owner of PLC programs, PCs, and related software, ensuring proper configuration management and version control. + Manage and coordinate annual thermal inspections of electrical systems and address any issues identified. + Design and implement automated control systems that support both automatic and manual modes of operation. + Develop, configure, and integrate Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for operator control and monitoring. + Troubleshoot and optimize PLCs, drives, instrumentation, and network infrastructure to improve reliability and performance. + Maintain thorough documentation of control systems, changes, and configurations to support maintenance and future upgrades. + Ensure all control systems and related work comply with safety, environmental, and quality standards. + Support operations and maintenance teams by providing technical guidance and resolving control-related issues. + Work flexible hours, including weekends and extra time as needed, to support projects and critical operational needs. Essential Skills + 5+ years of controls engineering experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment. + Proficiency in PLC programming, including design, implementation, and troubleshooting. + Hands-on experience programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLCs. + Ability to design, implement, and support automated control systems with both automatic and manual modes. + Experience developing and integrating HMIs for operator control and monitoring. + Ability to troubleshoot and optimize PLCs, drives, instrumentation, and network infrastructure. + Strong electrical drafting skills, including field wiring translation into drawings and maintenance of single-line diagrams. + Ability to maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards. + Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and extra hours, based on project and support needs. + Familiarity with drives such as PowerFlex or similar variable frequency drive systems. + Experience working with SCADA systems. + Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as the primary controls resource on site. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience with SCADA systems for monitoring and control of industrial processes. + Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). + Knowledge of federal mining laws (MSHA) and their impact on control system design and operation. + Understanding of mining methods and the operation of related equipment. + Knowledge in the installation, basic maintenance, or operation of mine ventilation systems. + Experience with materials processing and handling systems and their associated control requirements. + Familiarity with mine shaft maintenance and related control and safety systems. + Background in industries transitioning from automotive or similar environments is beneficial. + Ability to collaborate effectively with operations and maintenance teams and communicate technical concepts clearly. Work Environment This is an on-site role in an industrial production setting, where you can expect to work approximately 50-55 hours per week. The typical schedule runs from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with flexibility required to work weekends and additional hours based on project demands and operational support needs. You will serve as the sole controls engineer on the team, providing a high level of ownership and responsibility for all control systems. The environment involves working around heavy equipment, electrical systems, and process infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and adherence to environmental and quality standards. Appropriate industrial attire and personal protective equipment are expected in accordance with site safety requirements. The role offers a long-term opportunity with exposure to a unique industry, distinct from automotive, and includes potential for performance-based bonuses. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Detroit, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $110000.00 - $120000.00/yr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
