Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
This position provides technical and analytical support for the planning, design, construction, and operation of the City of South Haven's electric distribution system. The Electrical Distribution Engineer I is an entry-level position focused on developing professional engineering skills under the guidance and technical direction of senior engineering staff.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform engineering assignments of limited scope and complexity under supervision. Assist with the planning, design, and implementation of electric distribution and substation projects. Prepare engineering designs, calculations, and cost estimates for review by senior engineering staff. Perform basic system studies and modeling, including load flow analysis, fault current simulations, voltage drop evaluations, and fuse coordination. Conduct field data collection, equipment inspections, and site assessments. Assist with capital improvement plans and preventative maintenance strategies. Participate in developing design standards and construction specifications. Support maintenance of GIS-based mapping and asset records. Support SCADA, AMI, and communication systems for electric, water, and wastewater utility systems. Support commercial and industrial customers with planning for electric service needs and distributed generation. Support field crews during construction and maintenance. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs. This position does not supervise others.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field required. 0 to 5 years of experience in electric utility system distribution design and operations or related engineering. Internship or co-op experience preferred.Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Foundational understanding of electric power distribution systems. Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS
software, and Microsoft Office Suite. Effective written and verbal communication. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
Valid Michigan driver's license required. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) preferred or ability to obtain within 12 months.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Computer hardware and software including AutoCAD, electrical modeling tools, Microsoft Office, SCADA and GIS platforms. Standard office equipment and occasional use of field diagnostic instruments and measuring devices.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Occasional lifting and handling of items up to 25 pounds. Ability to navigate outdoor and construction environments. Mental stamina for detailed and technical tasks, occasionally interrupted by staff or public inquiries.WORK ENVIRONMENT
