Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
A Senior Controls Engineer is an experienced Engineer who is recognized as a leader within the company in their area of expertise; responsible for projects of considerable scope and complexity; often with little or no supervision for extended periods; including frequent interaction with internal associates, external customers, and suppliers. Primary focus includes machine design packages applying existing technology used within the company, as well as new technology and/or existing technology used within the industry; playing a critical role in improving and establishing new practices and standards throughout the company, while providing direction and guidance to others within the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Steward of the Douglas Mission (to enrich lives by providing differentiated packaging automation and services) and the Douglas Values (Unwavering Integrity, Servant's Heart, Ownership Spirit, and Continuous Innovation and Improvement)The primary deliverables of the Electrical Controls team include control concepts, software development, and documentation that support the following functions: PLC and HMI system design (operational strategy, controller specification, I/O assignment, software application development)Control system network architecture design (communication network design, unit operation strategy)Safety control system design (risk analysis, safety strategy, safety device assignment)Control device selection (I/O specification, sensors, actuators, analytics)Electrical integration documentation (line control strategy, connectivity, and interlocks necessary for project assembly, installation, and service) Expert in the creation of controls software packages (PLC, HMI, and coordinated motion) using existing technology used within the company, as well as new technology and/or existing technology used within the industryReviews, understands, and follows the design criteria outlined in the machine specification documents, including mechanical criteria that may affect the electrical and/or pneumatic designAuthority in all Douglas electrical standards, including engineering and assembly standards, national codes (NEC, NFPA79 and UL508A), and any other applicable standards and codesMaintains project schedules and completes assigned projects within allocated hoursTravels to customer sites to for pre-sale visits, design reviews, and/or to resolve machine installation or commissioning problemsInteracts in a professional manner with internal associates, external customers, and suppliers to support all assigned projects throughout their design, manufacture, build, validation, and commissioning phasesIdentifies opportunities for cost reductions and quality improvements in equipmentUtilizes, promotes, and improves corporate processes: Design and DevelopmentVerification and Validation Engineering Change ControlDouglas Improvement ProjectsResponsible for complying with all safety policies and proceduresAssists in the training of new employeesMentors and coaches new Electrical Engineering staffProvides machine design instructions to members of their design team, working with them to answer questions and resolve concerns with their projectsPerforms engineering analysis on critical design componentsLeads the development and/or improvement of Douglas engineering standards for an area of concern (analysis, design, or programming)Creates new processes and standards, and applies new technologiesFacilitates product developments, mock-ups, and performance tests as requiredPossesses the ability to manage difficult projects (go-to person)
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Requires one of the following: Requires an A.A. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, and a minimum of 12 years work experience in a related fieldRequires a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, and a minimum of 8 years work experience in a related fieldDemonstrated success in the design of packaging equipment
