Job Description

Hiring Department At Design and Construction, we are passionate about shaping the future of the MS&T University Campus by creating innovative, high-quality spaces that inspire and support the university's mission. We lead every phase of design and construction, from concept to completion, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. Whether it is new buildings, renovations, or infrastructure improvements, our expert team collaborates with campus stakeholders to bring visionary designs to life. With a blend of in-house design talent and industry-leading project and construction management, we are committed to building a campus that drives success and enhances the MS&T experience. Job Description This position will be responsible for engaging customers, departments, and leading the design of building electrical systems for a variety of campus projects. The responsibilities include scheduling, leading, and participating in meetings with clients and defining project parameters, authoring project budgets and schedules; and working with architects, engineers and other designers and project managers to provide coordinated and complete designs. These designs may include preparing contract documents and technical specifications suitable for bidding or for issuance to internal construction forces. Other responsibilities included preparing building permit applications and monitoring the quality and progress of construction projects. Project specific skills desired and responsibilities will include: Design and develop electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems for commercial, laboratory, healthcare and athletic facilities Conduct site visits, inspections, field surveys to support design and construction phases Perform detailed electrical calculations (load calculations, voltage drop, short circuit analysis) and write technical specifications Select and size electrical services, panels, feeders, conduits and components to be utilized in the electrical system of university projects Preparation of construction documents, including drawings, specifications, one-line diagrams and load calculations. Ensure designs comply with applicable
ICC & NFPA
codes and campus standards Able to lead the electrical design on a multi-discipline teams including architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and other team members Must be able to create and assemble a complete set of electrical construction documents Review of submittals and RFIs during construction administration Serve as Project Engineer and Project Manager on projects Use engineering and design computer software to complete assigned work Analyze existing building mechanical, electrical, lighting, fire alarm and computer network systems and apply codes and university standards to design electrical renovations through creation of construction documents in Revit or AutoCAD Solve complex design, construction, and system challenges of campus electrical, lighting, and fire alarm systems Analyze project feasibility and perform or manage design studies relative to project requirements Have a working knowledge of controls that monitor heating and cooling systems utilizing heated and chilled water systems. (Missouri S&T has one of the largest campus-wide geothermal heating and cooling systems in the nation.) Act as a design, code, and knowledge resource for others in the department Perform design and technical review for themselves and others on in-house and capital projects Develop preliminary and final cost estimates and project schedules Acts as a project manager for in-house design, and external consultant led design projects Comfort working across the project lifecycle, including design changes and updates Communicate difficult technical information to other design team members and clients with a goal to build consensus High productivity, attention to detail, effective verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work well in a team environment Perform other job-related duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications Depending Upon the candidates experience potential Employees will be employed as an Engineer II, Senior Engineer, or Managing Engineer. Candidates for the position shall have a bachelor's degree (preferably in Electrical Engineering) or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Preferred Qualifications At least 6 years' experience in Electrical design for buildings. Licensed as a Professional Engineering in Missouri or the ability to obtain within three months of employment at the University is desired.
