Job Description
Job Title:
Electrical Test Engineer Job Description The Electrical Test Engineer leads the planning, design, testing, and verification of powertrain ECU hardware and software in automotive applications. This role combines project and team management with hands-on engineering, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis to ensure that powertrain electronic control units meet performance, quality, reliability, and regulatory requirements. The engineer collaborates closely with technical leadership and cross-functional stakeholders, mentors other engineers on complex design and test topics, and ensures that assigned systems conform to relevant standards and certifications. Responsibilities Break down project concepts and change points into clear development activities and create comprehensive ECU development plans without requiring oversight from technical leadership. Correlate technical project details with key stakeholders, negotiate realistic schedules for deliverables, and communicate project status to technical leadership as needed. Design engineering specifications for powertrain ECU applications, covering both electrical circuit hardware and software, using tools such as MATLAB Simulink, Microsoft Visio, or other appropriate tools. Set the direction for design concepts, convert concepts into detailed requirements and functional specifications, and conduct design reviews with technical leadership. Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to other engineers on complex design implementations, best practices, and robust engineering methods. Perform hands-on engineering troubleshooting and root cause analysis on prototype and mass production vehicles to identify powertrain electronics functional issues. Determine and implement the steps required to resolve identified powertrain electronic issues, including solution design and validation. Plan and execute testing and verification of ECU hardware and software specifications in prototype and mass production vehicles, with a focus on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and verification of technical change points. Ensure that electrical functional performance, quality, and reliability targets are met through well-structured test procedures and thorough test coverage. Create clear, accurate test result reports and present verification outcomes in reviews with technical leadership and other stakeholders. Provide oversight, mentoring, and support to other engineers to ensure efficient test planning, proper execution of test activities, and consistent documentation of test results. Understand applicable external requirements, including regulations, ISO standards, cybersecurity requirements, and other necessary certifications relevant to the assigned systems. Ensure that assigned systems conform to all applicable external requirements and lead system-specific implementations of regulatory, ISO, and cybersecurity requirements. Mentor and lead other engineers in applying standards, regulations, and cybersecurity practices to powertrain ECU design, testing, and validation. Essential Skills Proven experience in hardware testing and electrical testing, with a strong focus on automotive powertrain ECU systems. Solid background in electrical engineering, including understanding of electrical circuits, ECU hardware, and embedded electronic systems. Hands-on experience developing and executing test procedures for electrical and electronic systems, from prototype through mass production. Practical experience with automotive ECU testing, including verification of hardware and software specifications. Working knowledge of powertrain systems and powertrain ECU functionality in automotive applications. Experience with CAN protocol and related automotive communication interfaces for ECU testing and diagnostics. Ability to perform engineering troubleshooting and root cause analysis on powertrain electronics using industry-standard tools and methods. Strong capability to plan, organize, and manage ECU development activities and testing tasks with minimal oversight. Ability to create clear, structured test reports and present technical findings to technical leadership and stakeholders. Familiarity with regulations, ISO standards, cybersecurity requirements, and other certifications relevant to automotive electronic systems. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience using MATLAB Simulink for modeling, simulation, and specification of ECU software and control logic. Experience using Microsoft Visio or similar tools for documenting electrical circuit designs, architectures, and specifications. Experience with automotive tools such as INCA or similar ECU calibration, measurement, and data acquisition tools. background in automotive environments, particularly in powertrain and ECU testing, validation, or development. Demonstrated ability to mentor and support other engineers on complex design and test topics. Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with technical leadership and cross-functional teams. Ability to lead design reviews and verification reviews, ensuring alignment with technical requirements and standards. ECU testing experience or training that supports systematic test planning, execution, and documentation. Work Environment The role operates in a dynamic automotive engineering environment focused on powertrain ECU development, testing, and validation. Work typically involves a mix of office-based activities, such as specification development, design reviews, and report preparation, and hands-on work with prototype and mass production vehicles for testing and troubleshooting. The engineer uses tools such as MATLAB Simulink, Microsoft Visio, ECU calibration and measurement tools (for example, INCA), and automotive communication interfaces such as CAN. The position requires close collaboration with technical leadership and other engineers, regular participation in technical and verification reviews, and adherence to automotive regulations, ISO standards, and cybersecurity requirements.
