Role:
The Amtrak Office Engineer plays a critical role in supporting the planning, design, and execution of railroad infrastructure projects across the United States. This position is responsible for ensuring that engineering documentation, project schedules, and cost estimates are accurate and up to date, facilitating smooth project delivery. The Office Engineer acts as a liaison between field engineering teams, contractors, and project management to maintain effective communication and resolve technical issues promptly. By managing project records and coordinating submittals, the Office Engineer helps maintain compliance with regulatory standards and company policies. Ultimately, this role contributes to the safe, efficient, and timely completion of Amtrak's infrastructure improvements, enhancing the overall passenger rail experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction or civil engineering office support, preferably in railroad or heavy civil infrastructure projects. Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Office Suite. Strong understanding of construction documentation, contract administration, and project controls. Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in the railroad industry or familiarity with railroad engineering standards and practices. Knowledge of Amtrak's engineering and safety standards. Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Project Management Professional (PMP). Experience with project management software such as Primavera P6. Ability to travel to project sites as needed to support field operations.
Responsibilities:
Prepare, review, and maintain engineering documents including drawings, specifications, and contract plans. Coordinate with project managers, field engineers, and contractors to track project progress and resolve technical issues. Manage project submittals, requests for information (RFIs), and change orders to ensure timely processing and documentation. Maintain accurate project records, including daily reports, correspondence, and cost tracking. Assist in the preparation of project schedules, budgets, and progress reports to support effective project management. Ensure compliance with Amtrak standards, safety regulations, and federal railroad administration requirements. Support the procurement process by reviewing vendor documentation and coordinating material deliveries.

The Office Engineer utilizes technical skills such as proficiency in AutoCAD to review and update engineering drawings daily, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements. Strong organizational skills are essential for managing extensive project documentation, including submittals and RFIs, which are critical for maintaining project timelines and budgets.
