Forensic Electrical EngineerLocation:
Fully remote with national travel
Compensation:
Base $150K-$200K (DOE)Position OverviewWe are seeking a Forensic Electrical Engineer to investigate electrical and electronic systems related to incidents, failures, and legal matters. The successful candidate will apply engineering principles, hands-on inspection, testing, and analysis to determine causes, document findings, and provide clear technical reports and expert testimony when required. This role supports legal teams, insurers, and corporate clients by delivering accurate, objective forensic evaluations and recommendations to prevent recurrence.

Key ResponsibilitiesConduct on-site inspections and laboratory testing of electrical and electronic systems, components, and installations to determine causes of failures, fires, or accidents.

Collect, preserve, and analyze physical evidence, circuit diagrams, wiring, and device histories in accordance with forensic protocols and chain-of-custody procedures.

Perform root-cause analysis using electrical theory, simulation tools, measurements, and failure analysis techniques to identify contributing factors and responsible parties.

Prepare clear, concise, and defensible technical reports, diagrams, and exhibits that summarize methods, findings, and conclusions for clients and legal teams.

Provide expert witness testimony, affidavits, and depositions in legal proceedings, conveying complex technical information to judges, juries, and attorneys.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical engineers, fire investigators, attorneys, insurers, and law enforcement to support investigations.

Develop and maintain testing procedures, equipment calibrations, and documentation to ensure reliable and repeatable forensic analysis.

Stay current with industry standards, codes, regulations (e.g., NEC, IEC), and emerging technologies to ensure analyses reflect best practices.

Mentor junior engineers and technicians, overseeing fieldwork, evidence handling, and report preparation to maintain quality and consistency.

QualificationsBachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Masters degree or specialized forensic engineering training preferred.

Registered Professional Engineer (PE)8+ years of electrical engineering experience, with at least 5 years in forensic investigations, failure analysis, fire investigations, or related fields.

Preferred certifications: IAAI - CFEI, CFI, or FIT (Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator, Certified Fire Investigator, or Fire Investigation Technician)Hands-on experience with electrical testing equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, hipot, power analyzers) and laboratory diagnostic tools.

Strong knowledge of electrical systems, wiring practices, protection devices, power distribution, and control systems.

Experience preparing technical reports and providing expert testimony in legal settings preferred.

Familiarity with forensic methodologies, evidence preservation, chain-of-custody, and legal requirements.

Certifications such as Forensic Engineer (FE), NFPA Fire Investigator, or PT (e.g., pressure testing) where applicable are a plus.

Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical issues to non-technical audiences.

Ability to travel to investigation sites and lift/handle equipment as required.
