Position:
As a Senior Controls and Instrumentation Engineer, you will play a key technical role within our multidisciplinary engineering team, supporting a wide variety of design projects. With your background and extensive experience in process automation, you will take the primary technical responsibility for the instrumentation and controls design effort from concept through construction and startup. You will maintain and optimize P&IDs, control strategies, instrumentation specifications, and integrated control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations for our clients. You will collaborate closely with process, mechanical, electrical power, and other disciplines to deliver high-quality, integrated designs. You will interact directly with clients, contractors, and vendors during design reviews, contractor scope development, bidding, construction support, and commissioning.
Responsibilities:
Lead instrumentation and controls engineering on industrial and chemical process projects Interpret and maintain detailed P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), ensuring proper identification and specification of all measurement and control elements Design and document process control systems, including PLC, DCS, and SCADA architectures, control narratives, cause & effect matrices, and logic diagrams Specify, select, and apply field instrumentation (flow, level, pressure, temperature, analyzers, control valves, actuators, etc.) for hazardous and general-purpose areas Develop instrument loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, termination drawings, and instrument data sheets Design motor controls, VFDs, and integration of equipment with control systems Participate in process hazard analyses (PHA) and control system design reviews Develop contractor scope of work packages, technical specifications, and construction support documentation Provide construction support, commissioning, and startup assistance for instrumentation and control systems as required Essential qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited institution 8 - 10+ years of progressive experience in controls and instrumentation design for chemical, petrochemical, or industrial facilities Strong expertise in interpreting/developing P&IDs, control strategies, and instrumentation specifications Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to mentor junior engineers Detail-oriented with strong organizational and project execution skills
Preferred Experience:
Current PE License or actively pursuing Hazardous area classification and instrumentation design for Class I/II, Div 1/2 environments Experience performing SIL assessments and designing Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) Power system integration, motor controls, and VFD applications in process plants Familiarity with power distribution design elements to support control system reliability Prior experience supporting construction, loop checking, and plant startup/commissioning We are an equal opportunity employer.
