Job Specialty:
Core Engineering What You'll Do As a Cognizant System Engineer/Technical Authority specializing in electrical hazards, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our nation's nuclear security mission at Pantex. You'll be at the forefront of protecting critical infrastructure and sensitive components from the unforgiving forces of lightning, electromagnetic radiation (EMR), and electrostatic discharge (ESD). This isn't just about maintaining systems; it's about directly contributing to the safety, security, and reliability of the nuclear weapons stockpile, ensuring a strong and viable deterrent for our country. Your work will be dynamic and multifaceted, encompassing:
Hazard Characterization and Mitigation:
You will meticulously analyze and characterize electrical hazards posed by lightning, EMR, and ESD. This includes assessing their impact on our facilities, engineered bonds, lightning protection systems, and electrostatic floors. You'll then be instrumental in developing and implementing cutting-edge mitigating controls to eliminate or drastically reduce these hazards, directly supporting seamless plant operations and the integrity of special nuclear materials.
System Ownership and Configuration Management:
You will serve as the technical steward for assigned systems, coordinating vital configuration management activities. This involves working closely with our Configuration Management program to ensure the rigorous implementation of Department of Energy (DOE) requirements for electrical equipment used in hazardous environments. Your expertise will be crucial in documenting and managing proposed equipment, ensuring compliance with stringent standards such as MIL-STD-461, and maintaining the highest levels of operational readiness.
Technical Leadership and Problem Solving:
You will assess system health and performance, providing comprehensive technical oversight for plant system operability and maintenance. This includes preparing and reviewing configuration control and design change packages, evaluating the impact of proposed modifications on approved safety authorization bases, and leading advanced troubleshooting efforts. Your deep understanding of electrical engineering and field theories will be essential in resolving complex technical challenges in cooperation with interdisciplinary teams, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of our critical assembly and disassembly operations.
Research and Innovation:
Your role will involve applying sophisticated systems and equipment expertise to resolve technical issues, often pushing the boundaries of current understanding. This could involve direct application of research experience in electromagnetics, whether from academic pursuits focusing on ESD or EMR, or from practical experience in industries with high ESD standards like semiconductor manufacturing. This is an unparalleled opportunity to apply your specialized knowledge in electrical engineering or physics, specifically in electromagnetics, to a mission of global importance. You'll be leveraging your solid foundation in scientific theory and hands-on laboratory experience—including circuit design, oscilloscopes, and signal analyzers—to protect vital national assets.
