Job Description

The South Texas Project Electric Generating Station is one of the newest and largest nuclear power facilities in the nation. SUMMARY The Digital Engineer in the System Engineering Department supports station activities related to the operation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, lifecycle management, and recovery of digital plant systems and digital subsections of other plant systems. The Digital Engineer may develop engineering changes for configuration changes, software changes, graphics changes, and other changes in addition to the development of engineering evaluations that support Operations & Maintenance. These activities may address emergent technical plant issues, improve plant equipment, and support plant performance and reliability. The Digital Engineer supports backup and restoration activities, monitors digital system health, supports recovery actions, and acts as the technical conscience for maintaining the design basis of assigned digital equipment. The Digital Engineer position is responsible for learning the plant site, procedures, programs, digital platforms, and organization along with obtaining engineering qualifications as required in the allotted timeframe.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES DIGITAL ENGINEERING TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Provides technical support for Operations and Maintenance personnel regarding digital plant systems, digital subsections of other plant systems, digital control systems, plant computer systems, communications interfaces, software/firmware configurations, graphics, and associated plant equipment. Supports and helps guide the digital transformation and modernization of plant equipment by providing technical input, system knowledge, and engineering support for the implementation, integration, and lifecycle management of digital technologies. Reviews performance and health of digital plant systems and recommends changes regarding operation, maintenance, testing, configuration management, recovery, lifecycle management, or modernization strategy. Leads the interface with other departments, vendors, and regulatory agencies by leading meetings and discussions to provide specific information and analysis to questions/problems involving digital plant systems. Prepares and reviews engineering documentation (i.e., calculations, specifications, analysis, drawings, logic/configuration documentation, software change documentation, graphics change documentation, evaluations, etc.) Provides independent engineering support to Maintenance that requires field investigation, inspections, troubleshooting, recovery, and solutions to problems involving digital systems and associated plant interfaces. Supports investigations and reports for apparent or root cause analysis and generates recommendations for corrective actions. Reviews and evaluates industry documentation, vendor information, cyber/operating experience, and event reports for relevant application to STP and identifies appropriate corrective actions. Develops and supports engineering changes, evaluations, and corrective actions for configuration changes, software changes, graphics changes, restoration, replacement, upgrade, and long-term support of obsolete or aging digital equipment. Maintains technical oversight of software, firmware, configuration files, backups, backup/restore methods, version control, vendor information, and restoration documentation necessary to maintain and recover digital systems. Supports monitoring, backup, restoration, recovery, and lifecycle management of digital plant systems while maintaining the plant design and licensing basis.
SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of digital system design, operation, maintenance, testing, configuration control, backup/restoration, recovery, and lifecycle management, preferably in nuclear power. Knowledge of PLCs, DCS platforms, embedded controllers, HMIs, plant computer systems, communications protocols, networking fundamentals, graphics, software/firmware configuration management, backup/restoration, and system health monitoring. Ability to read and interpret engineering documents, drawings, logic diagrams, configuration documentation, network architecture, vendor manuals, and software/firmware records. Strong technical writing and verbal communications skills required.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Accept Emergency Response Organization (ERO) position as needed. Accept outage position as needed. Support rotational engineering duty. Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access. Successfully complete General Employee Training (GET) as required for position.
ENVIRONMENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Environmental and physical requirements are subject to crouching, stooping, bending, twisting and/or lifting up to 30 lbs; ascending/descending stairs; sitting for extended periods of time; and spending considerable time in front of computer monitors.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Overtime and alternate work schedules as needed. Subject to callouts twenty-four hours per day seven days per week. Travel may be required. May be required to carry a phone. Support rotational engineering duty.
