Job Description

Job Title:
Electrical Design Engineer Job Description This role offers the opportunity to own printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) development from concept through production for advanced electronic systems that support satellite creation. The Electrical Design Engineer designs and optimizes complex electronic sub-systems, leads high-speed digital circuitry development, and drives test and validation activities to ensure robust, production-ready hardware. This position collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, leads vendor engagement, and plays a key role in transitioning designs into reliable, scalable manufacturing. Responsibilities Own PCBA development from initial concept through production, ensuring robust, manufacturable designs that meet performance, cost, and reliability targets. Design and optimize different blocks of electronic sub-systems, including board-level analog and digital circuits. Design high-speed digital circuitry in collaboration with various engineering teams, with a focus on multi-gigabit SERDES, signal integrity, and power integrity. Lead and review schematic capture and PCB layout, providing technical guidance and design feedback to ensure best practices and design quality. Lead PCB vendor engagement for design-for-manufacturability (DFM) reviews and collaborate with suppliers to optimize fabrication and assembly processes. Optimize PCB stack-up for both performance and cost, balancing electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing constraints. Generate detailed test plans and procedures based on high-level requirement definitions to validate boards, modules, and sub-systems. Complete board bring-up activities and perform test campaigns for different modules and sub-systems, identifying and resolving design and implementation issues. Design automated test systems, test fixtures, and factory test solutions to support efficient, repeatable verification and production testing. Support the transition of designs into production, including resolving manufacturing issues, improving yields, and refining test coverage. Develop functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures that clearly define requirements and validation approaches. Use lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters to debug, characterize, and validate hardware performance. Collaborate with project teams and potentially contribute to project management activities for technical projects, including planning, tracking, and reporting. Participate in the design, implementation, bring-up, and debugging of proof-of-concept hardware and prototypes to de-risk new technologies and architectures. Develop or utilize programs for instrument control and automated testing to increase efficiency and consistency in verification activities. Essential Skills 7+ years of industrial experience in board-level analog and digital design, with a strong focus on PCBA development. 1+ years of experience in high-speed digital design, including multi-gigabit SERDES, signal integrity, and power integrity. 3+ years of experience using schematic capture tools for complex electronic designs. 2+ years of experience using lab equipment, including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters, for hardware bring-up and debugging. Experience with Mentor Graphics or Cadence PCB layout tools for schematic review and layout collaboration. Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures for electronic systems. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience in a closely related field. Proven ability to lead and review schematic capture and PCB layout, ensuring adherence to design rules and best practices. Demonstrated capability to design and optimize electronic sub-systems for performance, cost, and manufacturability. Strong hands-on skills in board bring-up, testing, and troubleshooting of complex electronic assemblies. Additional Skills & Qualifications Master of Science or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. Experience with project management of technical projects, including planning, coordination, and tracking of engineering activities. Familiarity with analog electronic fundamentals such as transistor circuits, operational amplifiers, and filters. Experience in the design, implementation, bring-up, and debugging of proof-of-concept hardware and prototypes. Familiarity with power supply design, including selection and integration of power management components. Previous work experience in a programming language relevant to hardware development or test automation. Proficiency in developing programs for instrument control and automated test systems. Experience designing automated test systems, test fixtures, and factory test processes to support production environments. Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors. Ability to work independently, take ownership of complex technical challenges, and drive solutions from concept to production.
