Job Description

Job Title:
Electrical Designer Job Description The Electrical Designer is responsible for designing and modifying vehicle electrical systems, with a focus on producing clear and accurate wiring diagrams and schematics that support production. This role interprets existing bills of materials and engineering inputs to develop precise AutoCAD drawings that show how electrical components are integrated and installed. The position is primarily desk-based within an engineering environment, but requires regular collaboration with the shop floor to validate installation, routing, and functionality. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to translate engineering intent into production-ready documentation, and a willingness to be hands-on in a manufacturing setting. Responsibilities Design and modify electrical systems for automotive and vehicle-based products using AutoCAD. Create wiring diagrams and schematics that clearly communicate installation requirements to production teams. Interpret and merge information from multiple bills of materials (BOMs) to develop accurate electrical documentation. Define wiring connections, routing paths, and component integration into existing electrical systems. Collaborate daily with shop floor personnel to validate installation, fit, routing, and functional performance. Support engineering change processes and maintain up-to-date documentation within product lifecycle management tools such as ARAS. Ensure design accuracy, completeness, and alignment with project timelines and engineering requirements. Assist with troubleshooting electrical installation issues identified on the shop floor and refine documentation accordingly. Update and refine electrical drawings to reflect revisions, changes, and continuous improvement initiatives. Work closely with functional leads and mentors to align designs with project standards and best practices. Essential Skills Hands-on electrical system design experience in automotive or product-based environments. Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating schematics, diagrams, and electrical layouts. Experience with electrical drafting, including 2D wiring diagrams and electrical system schematics. Basic understanding of wiring and harness diagrams and how they are used in production. Understanding of bills of materials (BOMs), including components, parts, and system relationships. Ability to interpret engineering inputs and translate them into production-ready electrical documentation. Willingness to work closely with production teams and support on-floor installation validation. Ability to learn and work within product lifecycle management systems such as ARAS. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in electrical documentation and design. Capability to support engineering change orders and maintain organized, current documentation. Comfort working in a manufacturing environment and collaborating across engineering and production teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience creating production-facing wiring diagrams or installation documentation. Knowledge of electrical connectors and routing best practices in vehicle or product applications. Exposure to automotive or heavy vehicle electrical systems, such as fire apparatus or heavy truck chassis. Experience modifying existing drawings and templates, including title blocks, scaling, and revision updates. Interest in working as part of a multi-disciplinary design team that includes both mechanical and electrical designers. Ability to work effectively with functional leads and mentors to ramp up on new workloads and standards. Strong communication skills to clearly convey design intent to both engineering and shop floor personnel. Work Environment The role is based in an engineering building within a manufacturing organization that designs and builds custom fire apparatus, heavy truck chassis, custom vehicles, and truck bodies. The Electrical Designer will work primarily at a cubicle in a design-focused environment alongside other engineers and designers, including a team of approximately 12 mechanical and electrical designers. The position involves frequent interaction with functional leads and mentors, providing guidance and training on workload and standards. While most work is desk-based using tools such as AutoCAD and product lifecycle management systems, the role includes regular visits to the shop floor to verify installations, ensure designs match real-world conditions, and troubleshoot issues. The standard work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some periods of required overtime on Fridays, compensated at 1.5 times the regular rate. Consultants receive one week of vacation every six months on assignment, as well as six major holidays. The environment combines structured engineering processes with hands-on collaboration in a production setting, offering opportunities to see designs move from concept to completed vehicles.
