Job Summary
A specialized energy engineering and construction firm is hiring a Senior Mechanical Designer to support industrial power distribution and generation projects. This role is responsible for leading project coordination efforts while performing production design and drafting for combined heat and power plants, district energy systems, municipal-scale power generation facilities, and renewable energy projects. The position requires expertise in industrial process piping and ductwork design, equipment layout, and the development of comprehensive mechanical design documents to support construction and successful project delivery.
Responsibilities
Utilize AutoCAD 2D and 3D, Revit, Navisworks, and other CAD software to create engineering design drawings for energy-related projects
Develop Process & Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs)
Produce piping plans, sections, and isometrics
Develop ductwork plans, sections, and details
Create installation details for pumps, fans, instrumentation, control valves, and related equipment
Develop 3D equipment location plans and general arrangement drawings
Produce pipe and duct support details
Review vendor engineering submittals and incorporate information into project drawings
Coordinate with system engineers to ensure hydraulic, pipe stress, thermal expansion, and other design considerations are incorporated
Collaborate with internal multi-discipline designers to support successful project delivery
Coordinate with external consultants and vendors on design-related topics
Conceptualize and assemble complete sets of design documents for construction
Provide construction support, including reviewing field conditions and assisting contractors with implementation and troubleshooting
Visit project sites as needed to obtain dimensional information and translate findings into design documentation
Qualifications
Required:
Associate degree in a related field
7+ years of relevant mechanical design experience
Proficiency with AutoCAD Plant 3D and Navisworks
Experience developing plan, elevation, section, and detail drawings for equipment and piping
Strong written and verbal technical communication skills
Strong attention to detail
Knowledge of process equipment such as pumps, heat exchangers, control valves, and related systems
Knowledge of pipe routing and pipe support design
Understanding of piping system fabrication, construction, and installation
Understanding of basic construction processes related to equipment and piping installation
Authorization to work for any employer in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future
Willingness to travel 0-3 weeks per year
Preferred:
Revit experience
Experience in the energy industry and/or process systems
Knowledge of best practices for layout of power and process plants
Experience with 3D equipment location plans and general arrangement drawings
Self-starter with strong organizational and coordination skills
