Job Description

Job Title:
BIM Designer / BIM Lead - Electrical Construction Job Description This role leads and executes Building Information Modeling (BIM) for large, complex electrical construction projects using Revit and related technologies. You will develop highly detailed 2D and 3D models, shop drawings, and installation documents that directly support field teams and prefabrication operations, helping the project run more efficiently, accurately, and cost-effectively. The position offers strong training, clear growth paths, and the opportunity to influence processes in a highly respected, forward-thinking BIM department. Responsibilities Develop and maintain detailed Revit models and families for both general use and project-specific electrical needs, ensuring they are accurate, constructible, and field-ready. Produce shop drawings, submittal drawings, as-built drawings, and other project documentation that support construction layout, prefabrication, and field installation. Model electrical system components in Revit, including switchgear, conduit, cable tray, lighting, and related systems, with a clear understanding of how they will be installed in the field. Create precise installation drawings and layout documents for jobsite personnel, providing exact measurements and details so field teams and prefabrication can replicate the model efficiently. Coordinate electrical installations with other trades, using BIM tools and clash detection workflows to identify and resolve conflicts as early as possible in the design and construction process. Attend internal and external BIM coordination and clash detection meetings, represent the company professionally, and work closely with project teams to clear clashes and meet project BIM requirements. Assist with the organization, coordination, and management of electronic project files, models, and related documentation throughout the project lifecycle. Support large, long-duration electrical projects (typically over one year in duration and over $15M in electrical contract value), managing one major project at a time while handling smaller side projects as needed. Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, foremen, and prefabrication teams to ensure models and drawings are highly detailed, practical, and aligned with construction and cost-estimating needs. Provide information and detailed drawings to coworkers to support sub-assembly and prefabrication activities, helping standardize and streamline repetitive industrial work. Use software such as Revit, Navisworks, MEP tools, Bluebeam, MS Office, and Robotic Total Station software to support modeling, coordination, documentation, and layout. Interpret and work from construction drawings, blueprints, and construction schedules to plan and sequence modeling and drawing production. Apply knowledge of commercial electrical systems, wiring diagrams, NEC codes, panel schedules, and day-to-day electrical layouts to ensure models and drawings meet code and constructability standards. Bring forward new and innovative ideas to improve BIM workflows, standards, and processes, contributing to ongoing process improvement within the department. Communicate effectively with internal teams, external design firms, general contractors, and end customers to clarify requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment on project goals. Mentor and guide junior BIM staff as needed, and over time, potentially lead a small team or have direct reports based on project size and your career interests. Manage workload to complete drawings and deliverables on time and within quality specifications, multitasking across a primary large project and smaller assignments without compromising quality. Retain and apply training and project knowledge over time, continuously building expertise in electrical BIM and contributing to the strength of the BIM department. Essential Skills At least 2 years of hands-on Revit experience working for an engineering firm or MEP contractor. Proficiency with Revit and Navisworks software, including modeling and coordination workflows. Ability to read and interpret building layouts, construction drawings, and blueprints. Understanding of how electricity works in a commercial setting, including basic wiring diagrams, fundamental NEC codes, and typical electrical layouts. Capability to draw conduit, circuit systems, and panel schedules in Revit, and to develop day-to-day electrical drawings suitable for construction. Experience producing construction drawings, shop drawings, and other construction documents for the electrical or MEP environment. Strong attention to detail with a proven ability to work efficiently while maintaining a high level of quality in models and drawings. Demonstrated ability to manage one large project while handling smaller side projects, delivering work on time and within quality standards. Comfort working primarily at a desk (approximately 80-90% of the time) with occasional visits to job sites to interact with customers and field teams. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with internal teams, external vendors, design firms, and contractors. Internal drive, positive attitude, and ambition to improve team processes, increase efficiency, and grow professionally within the company. Ability to retain information after training and apply it consistently to future projects. Team-oriented mindset, task focus, and a strong drive for results in a fast-paced project environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience building custom electrical Revit families is a strong plus. Advanced or expert-level Revit skills, particularly in electrical modeling and documentation, are highly desirable. Electrical knowledge or background in commercial or industrial projects, including familiarity with NEC and constructability considerations. An associate degree in a related field (such as drafting, design, engineering technology, or similar) is preferred but not required. Experience designing electrical diagrams and layouts in Revit, including an understanding of families, parameters, and data-rich modeling. Familiarity with Bluebeam, MS Office, and Robotic Total Station software for coordination, markups, and layout is beneficial. background working with construction schedules, construction documents, and architectural or engineering teams. Forward-thinking mindset with a desire to advance skills, embrace new technologies, and participate in process improvements. Ability to bring innovative ideas to improve current BIM processes and procedures. Experience working on large-scale projects such as healthcare facilities, schools, clinics, data centers, battery storage facilities, or renewable energy projects. Experience training or mentoring junior staff and running projects independently with minimal direction is a plus for the lead-level aspects of the role. Work Environment You will work within an established electrical division and a highly regarded BIM department that is known for being one of the strongest in the region. The team uses Revit extensively and practically, going far beyond conceptual modeling to produce highly detailed, constructible models that drive prefabrication, field installation, and cost estimating. You will collaborate closely with a team of six Revit Technicians and a BIM Manager who has an architectural background and is focused on cutting-edge, efficient, and forward-thinking design practices. The environment is professional yet relaxed, with a family-owned culture, low micromanagement, and a strong emphasis on teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement. Team members enjoy a supportive atmosphere where they listen to music, participate in company outings, and share a long history of tenure and growth within the organization. Work is primarily first-shift with flexible hours, focused on meeting project deadlines and supporting large-scale projects such as schools, hospitals, clinics, data centers, battery storage facilities, renewable energy installations, and large industrial sites with extensive underground conduit systems. You will spend most of your time in the office working at a computer, with occasional visits to job sites and interactions with external design firms and contractors. The company supports hybrid flexibility by offering the option to work remotely one day per week after approximately 12 months of employment. You may work from any of three office locations, and you will use technologies such as Revit, Navisworks, MEP tools, Bluebeam, MS Office, and Robotic Total Station software. The dress code is business casual, typically dress pants and a polo shirt.
