Job Description

BESS Principal Engineer Contract‑to‑Hire | Fully Remote (Project‑Based Travel ~25%) Lead the Future of Grid‑Scale Energy Storage We are seeking a BESS Principal Engineer to play a critical leadership role in the development and execution of large‑scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). This position offers the opportunity to design and deliver industry‑leading energy storage solutions that directly support the transition to a cleaner, more resilient electric grid. You'll work for one of the most respected and forward‑thinking renewable energy organizations in the U.S.—known for operating at unmatched scale, setting industry standards, and investing heavily in innovation, safety, and long‑term infrastructure. What You'll Do As a technical leader, you'll guide projects from concept through commissioning while influencing engineering best practices across the portfolio.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading engineering design for utility‑scale energy storage systems and major components Identifying design gaps, resolving inconsistencies, and driving continuous quality improvement Reviewing and correcting engineering studies while developing solutions to avoid future issues Developing technical scopes of work and supporting contract execution Partnering closely with project managers to support projects from early development through completion Influencing multi‑disciplinary engineering teams and providing technical direction Managing engineering milestones, identifying technical risks, and supporting mitigation strategies Collaborating with suppliers to integrate battery systems, inverters, substations, and controls Supporting equipment procurement, permitting requirements, and site design optimization Traveling to project sites (~25%) to support execution and problem solving What We're Looking For Required Experience & Skills 3+ years of experience in solar PV and/or energy storage engineering or construction Deep expertise in at least one of the following: Battery energy storage system (BESS) design Power electronics Substation or generation tie design Strong knowledge of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries and power conversion equipment Familiarity with lithium‑ion safety and code requirements (UL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NEC, IFC/IBC) Ability to independently lead complex technical workstreams Clear, confident written and verbal communication skills Preferred Familiarity with IEC standards Why This Role Stands Out Work for a market‑leading renewable energy organization driving some of the largest clean‑energy projects in North America Influence best‑in‑class energy storage designs that set industry benchmarks Exposure to projects at massive scale with long‑term operational impact Collaborative, high‑performance engineering culture that values expertise and accountability Fully remote flexibility paired with meaningful, hands‑on project involvement Contract‑to‑hire pathway offering long‑term career potential Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Juno Beach, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $65.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
