- Position Summary...
- The Senior Director, Performance Acceleration Engineering leads the engineering pillar within the Grocery Network Performance Acceleration team.
This role is responsible for providing the technical engineering capability required to identify, design, validate, and scale higher-complexity process, automation, in depth business analytics, operational flow, and mechanism improvements across the network. The role ensures engineering-supported solutions are feasible, scalable, and aligned with operational realities while working as part of the broader Performance Acceleration system. This leader partners closely with Performance Acceleration Operations, Centers of Excellence, divisional leaders, field teams, and key external/internal engineering and equipment partners to translate technical opportunities into practical network performance improvements. The role is accountable for strengthening the organization's ability to solve technically complex problems, reduce operational barriers, enable scalable solutions, and improve performance through sound engineering design and disciplined execution.
- What you'll do...
- Lead the engineering pillar of the Performance Acceleration model
- + Provide overall direction for the engineering function within the Grocery Network Performance Acceleration organization.
+ Establish and lead the engineering strategy that supports network performance improvement, technical enablement, and scalable solution design. + Ensure engineering work is aligned to business priorities, operational needs, and the future-state PA operating model. + Serve as the senior engineering leader interfacing with Operations, CoE, divisional leaders, field teams, and key support partners.
- Drive technical solution design and engineering enablement
- + Oversee the identification, design, and implementation of engineering-enabled solutions that reduce operating expense, improve service, improve safety, and enhance operational performance.
+ Lead the evaluation of technical opportunities involving automation, material flow, equipment capability, mechanism design, infrastructure constraints, and broader operating-system improvements. + Ensure engineering-supported initiatives are grounded in strong technical feasibility, operational practicality, and long-term scalability. + Apply industrial engineering, systems thinking, data analysis, and technology-enabled methods to improve flow, capacity, and performance across the network.
- Support pilot validation, scale readiness, and deployment
- + Partner with CoE and field teams to ensure technically complex pilots are properly validated and packaged for scale.
+ Support the transition of solutions from development and pilot through rollout and sustainment by ensuring technical requirements, assumptions, and constraints are clearly understood. + Review and approve engineering plans, implementation timelines, budgets, and operational readiness for multi-site initiatives where engineering support is required. + Visit sites and engage with field teams to validate needs, remove barriers, and ensure technical solutions are progressing according to plan while minimizing operational disruption.
- Provide governance, visibility, and partnership across the network
- + Build strong working relationships with divisional leaders, operations leaders, engineering partners, suppliers, and internal support teams to align priorities and resources.
+ Review and confirm business cases, financial analyses, and project justifications for engineering-supported work. + Provide visibility to senior leadership on technical opportunities, risks, readiness, constraints, and expected value. + Present engineering concepts, design recommendations, and network-enablement plans to senior leadership for review and decision-making.
- Lead high-impact engineering teams and capabilities
- + Lead and develop a high-performing engineering organization capable of solving complex network problems and supporting technically enabled performance improvement.
+ Manage priorities and resource allocation across multiple engineering initiatives and ensure the team is focused on the highest-value work. + Build organizational capability in data-enabled engineering, mechanism design, technical problem solving, and scalable operational support. + Strengthen the team's ability to develop engineering solutions that simplify field execution, reduce redundant work, and increase adoption.
- What Success Looks Like
- + Engineering is engaged on the right opportunities requiring technical depth and system-level thinking.
+ Technical solutions are feasible, scalable, and integrated effectively into pilot, rollout, and sustainment processes. + Operational barriers tied to engineering, infrastructure, capacity, or mechanism design are solved more quickly and more effectively. + High-impact engineering-supported solutions are scaled successfully with less rework and less operational disruption. + Leadership has strong visibility into technical opportunity, risk, and value across the network. + The engineering function is seen as a practical enabler of performance acceleration, not a siloed specialty team.
- What you'll bring…
- + Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, Logistics, or related field, or equivalent experience.
+ Experience leading engineering, industrial engineering, supply chain engineering, automation, material handling, or network optimization teams. + Experience managing large-scale, cross-functional projects or technical programs across multiple locations. + Experience translating technical concepts into business decisions and operational execution. + Experience in grocery, distribution, fulfillment, logistics, automation, or complex supply chain environments. + Experience supporting mechanized, automated, or material-handling-intensive operations. + Experience with data-enabled engineering, AI-enabled analytics, or digital engineering tools. + Experience operating in large, matrixed organizations with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
- Leadership Expectations
- + Provide overall direction by analyzing business objectives, operational needs, and engineering opportunities and translating them into clear priorities, plans, and actions.
+ Build strong cross-functional relationships and operate as an enterprise leader within the broader Performance Acceleration system. + Develop talent through coaching, mentorship, succession planning, and continuous learning. + Foster an environment of integrity, accountability, and strong partnership. + Lead with a customer-first, business-minded, and operationally practical mindset. + Drive continuous improvement, innovation, and responsible adoption of new technologies in support of Walmart's business model.
