Job Description
Role and Responsibilities:
Develop projects pre-contract understanding aspects of complex microgrid while looking at all project aspects for cost reduction opportunities. Lead a global proposal electrical design team of talented engineers to develop projects for installations of Bloom fuel cells that allow high-quality, timely and cost competitive execution. Prepare a design set and specifications, including electrical design aspects for the installation of Bloom Energy fuel cell. Perform and review power systems studies that include, voltage drop, short-circuit, coordination, and Arc Flash. Create Sequence of Operations to state how the fuel cells will transfer from paralleling with the utility to microgrid (island) operation. Design microgrids with fuel cell generation to insure the physically installation meets all product specifications and the customer's needs. Provide technical support while working with 3rd party microgrid controllers. Lead and participate in end to end process for CAD standards and optimization. Active participation in project due diligence with cross functional team. Work closely with other disciplines of engineers within team to optimize designs, develop and maintain design standards and template specifications, and perform engineering design tasks and calculations. Evaluate existing site conditions based on record drawings, surveys, field notes and photos, and other related information provided by others to incorporate Bloom Energy installation improvements for commercial land development projects and prepare design project schedule, budget, deliverables, etc. as needed. Think outside the box to find innovative solutions to reduce product and installation costs without negative impacts on quality and reliability. Manage external partners and consultants through the proposal design phase. Ensure drawing package and documents meet all Building and Construction code requirements and conforms to internal specifications required for the implementation of Bloom Energy fuel cell systems. Understanding of structural calculations and their influence on site designs, as related to equipment foundations, parcel grading, and building interior conduit routing. Participate in project meetings to provide status updates on design deliverables and present design plan sets to customers, internal cross-functional teams, and others as needed. Coordinate with drafting team to incorporate electrical, civil, mechanical, and structural details into the contract documents. Coordinate with other team members and Project Manager to create detailed Scope of Work documents for construction RFPs, respond to pre-bid RFI's, and value engineer designs for improvements to cost estimates and schedules. Provide Construction Administration support by responding to construction submittals and RFIs. Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, and interfacing with authorities having jurisdiction. Anticipated travel is approximately 20%. Drive the adoption and implementation of cutting edge approaches to installations that minimize cost and maximize quality and speed. Lead the group to set and meet or exceed performance goals that provide Bloom with competitive advantages in the marketplace. Continuously develop and maintain standard set of specifications for site designs which includes all aspects of "green" and "brown" installations. Collaborate with peers in the Installation group to ensure tight coordination and integration of all utility, regulatory, customer and permitting requirements. Coach, mentor and help the team achieve higher levels of performance in a rewarding and fun environment. Implement processes and procedures to systemically improve the quality of the design process with quantifiable validation and feedback loops Work closely with company R D, Product management and other internal groups to provide inputs into the design of future generation products. Participate in the Phase Review process for product development. Create and execute strategic plans to ensure that the organization is prepared to address new business goals. Be a charismatic leader with good leadership skills including strong inter-personal skills to effectively manage and nourish relationships at senior levels with Customers, Suppliers, Utilities, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ's). Develop internal capability to sign and seal drawings for submission toAHJs Skills and Experience:
BS or MS in electrical engineering with 15+ years of hands on experience in power generation, distribution or other highly relevant industry. PE License preferred. Construction and facility maintenance experience. Experience in the energy sector is preferred, must have experience working broader design disciplines - electrical, mechanical, electro-chemical - to create construction drawings. An understanding of electrical equipment (e.g. diesel generators, UPS systems, transfer switches) and other relevant components, and the code requirements associated with installing these components is preferred. Highly motivated self-starter with experience in managing a large group engineers and contractors. Strong inter-personal and communication skills up, down and across the organization and outside the company including the ability to confidently and effectively define engineering requirements including to non-technical audiences. Knowledge of codes related to construction projects (i.e.IBC, NFPA, NEC, ASCE, AWWA
) Experience with utilities, permitting agencies and developing a permit drawing set. Intellectual curiosity and drive to move the needle on excellence. Technical knowledge, including: Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, Green Energy. Code knowledge, including: NEC, NFPA, California Rule 21 Ability to be a self-starter and prioritize workload based on Bloom Energy's needs. Must be proactive. Ie, think many steps ahead and highlight potential risks to the Project Management Team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to excel in a professional environment with a lot of cross functional collaboration. Detail oriented with the ability to drive complex tasks to closure. The total compensation for this position includes standard company benefits and is based on various factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience.
