Job Description
Under general supervision, the Engineer will support Engineering Planning to enhance the distribution and transmission systems ensuring safe and reliable power delivery. Responsibilities include identifying clean energy investments that can defer traditional infrastructure or be paired with lower-cost traditional investments to support NY/NJ clean energy goals. The Engineer will participate in short- and long-term load forecasting and contingency analysis to identify system needs . They will develop solutions such as new substations, transmission projects, distribution improvements, and Non-Wire Alternatives (NWAs). This role supports projects such as the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), Coordinated Grid Planning Process (CGPP), Distribution System Implementation Plan (DSIP), Long Range Plan (LRP), Energy Master Plan (EMP), and Climate Resiliency. The engineer will attend industry conferences, participate in
NY/NJ JU/EDC
meetings, stakeholder meetings, and serve on technical committees as required. They will also work closely with O&Rs Distribution Resource Integration (DRI) team to assess clean energy technology penetration and program initiatives. This position reports to the Section Manager of Planning and supports the work of Senior Engineers within the Planning group. Required Education/Experience Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 3 years of engineering work experience Preferred Education/Experience Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering Relevant Work Experience The Engineer must have a minimum of 3-5 years of engineering work experience with electric power systems; familiarity with system planning or engineering design is preferred. Must be well organized, detail-oriented and flexible to handle multiple assignments and deadlines, required. Capable of independent work which includes the ability to understand planning concepts and electric system analysis, required. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to effectively interact with customers, support staff, and various levels of management, required. Must have strong analytical, technical and interpersonal skills, required. Must have demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work on teams and cross-functional projects, required. Engineer-In-Training Preferred Additional Physical Demands The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed. Must be able to safely perform witness tests at DER field sites. Core Responsibilities Conduct annual load forecasting, contingency analysis, and NWA evaluations to identify system needs. Collaborate with the Utility of the Future team to support NY/NJ clean energy goals and long-term corporate strategies, including the LRP, Climate Resiliency, NWAs, EV projects, and EAMs. Identify and justify capital projects for the ten-year electric delivery system plan, supporting system reliability and clean energy goals. Develop conceptual designs and documentation for T&D system improvements, including white papers, cost/benefit analyses, and project justifications. Perform distribution system modeling and analysis, including voltage profiles, loss studies, contingency switching, and circuit reconfigurations. Provide operational support such as fuse coordination, motor start calculations, voltage regulation settings, transformer tap settings, and voltage issue investigations. Review interconnection studies, develop estimates, attend DER meetings, and support DER planning. Conduct steady-state power flow, voltage stability, and transfer analyses to ensure compliance with planning criteria andNERC/FERC
standards. Participate in transmission system planning studies and regional planning efforts with NYISO, PJM, NPCC, and RFC. Prepare engineering procedure guides, reports, and presentations to document technical analysis. Coordinate summer readiness efforts, including task tracking, weekly meetings, and daily calls during heat events. Stay current with industry trends via webinars, conferences, stakeholder meetings, and technical committees; support emergency management and storm response efforts as required.Similar remote jobs
