Director of Engineering Construction Engineering & Structural Systems Location:
Dublin, Ohio Reports To:
Chief Executive Officer About Structured Design & Consulting Structured Design & Consulting (SDC) is a fast-growing engineering firm specializing in construction engineering, structural engineering, and contractor-support engineering services throughout Ohio and surrounding markets. Our work focuses heavily on temporary works and construction-phase engineering including: Earth retention systems Structural underpinning Cofferdams and temporary support systems Bridge jacking and erection engineering Falsework and shoring systems Contractor means-and-methods support Structural inspections and specialty engineering We are building a highly technical, execution-focused engineering company that bridges the gap between engineering and construction. Our clients include contractors, developers, municipalities, industrial clients, and construction managers that require responsive, practical, field-oriented engineering solutions. This role is a critical leadership position within the company and is intended to help scale SDC into a premier construction engineering firm while developing operational systems that allow the business to grow independently of the founder. Position Overview Structured Design & Consulting is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Professional Engineer to serve as Director of Engineering. This individual will lead the company's engineering operations, technical development, project delivery systems, and engineering staff while helping expand SDC's growing construction engineering practice. The ideal candidate is both technically strong and operationally minded. This role is not solely focused on engineering calculations or project management. It is a leadership role focused on building scalable systems, mentoring engineering staff, improving operational efficiency, maintaining technical quality, and helping to drive the organization's future growth. The ideal candidate is practical, solutions-oriented, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment. This individual should enjoy solving complex engineering problems while also helping build systems, mentor people, and improve operations across the organization. This position will serve as a key leader within the company and work directly with executive leadership to help shape the firm's long-term direction. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership & Engineering Oversight Serve as a senior technical leader and Engineer of Record for engineering projects. Lead technical review, QA/QC processes, and engineering standards across the company. Oversee structural and construction engineering project execution. Review and approve engineering calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and engineering standards. Assist in developing and standardizing engineering procedures and technical workflows. Help expand and refine SDC's construction engineering capabilities, including: Temporary works, Shoring systems, Earth retention, Cofferdam, Underpinning, Bridge erection engineering, Jacking systems, Contractor support engineering Operations & Systems Development Improve operational efficiency and engineering production workflows. Help build systems and processes that allow the engineering team to scale efficiently as the company grows. Assist with staffing plans, workload forecasting, scheduling, and resource management. Collaborate with leadership on operational planning and strategic growth initiatives. Help establish standards, templates, training systems, and engineering best practices. Support implementation of internal quality control and risk management procedures. Team Leadership & Staff Development Mentor and develop junior engineers, E.I.T.s, CAD staff, interns, and technical personnel. Conduct recurring one-on-one meetings with engineering staff to support professional growth and accountability. Assist with recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and training engineering personnel. Foster a culture of professionalism, responsiveness, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. Help create career development pathways for engineering team members. Client & Business Development Support Maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, owners, and project stakeholders. Support proposal development, project planning, and strategic business pursuits. Assist in identifying opportunities for company growth and expanded service offerings. Help position SDC as a leading construction engineering and contractor-support engineering firm in the region. Support project profitability, client satisfaction, and repeat business development. Construction Engineering & Field Operations Support Participate in site visits, inspections, and construction coordination efforts as needed. Provide practical, construction-oriented engineering support to field operations and contractors. Assist with construction sequencing reviews, constructability considerations, and temporary support planning. Support emergency response engineering and time-sensitive field operations when required. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering required. Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required. 10+ years of engineering experience in consulting, construction, contractor support, or related industries. Strong understanding of structural engineering principles and construction operations. Experience managing engineering staff and technical project delivery. Experience with construction engineering or temporary works strongly preferred. Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to balance technical engineering responsibilities with operational leadership. Strong problem-solving mindset with practical field-oriented thinking. Experience with steel, concrete, shoring, retaining wall, or bridge-related engineering preferred. Ability to thrive in a fast-moving entrepreneurial environment. Compensation & Benefits Compensation Competitive base salary anticipated in the range of $130,000 - $180,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Pay:
$130,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year
