Job Title:
Distribution DesignerJob Description The Distribution Designer provides detailed design for overhead and underground electric distribution systems ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. This role develops complete design and construction packages, performs design calculations, and ensures all work complies with applicable standards, guidelines, and industry practices. The Distribution Designer also monitors and maintains project schedules and budgets, identifies risks and opportunities for improvement, and serves as a subject matter expert while mentoring less experienced designers. Responsibilities + Design overhead and underground electric distribution facilities for systems ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. + Prepare design sketches, detailed drawings, cost estimates, bills of material, and all required documents to support construction activities. + Apply applicable standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, procedures, and industry standards when preparing designs for electric distribution facilities. + Perform distribution system design calculations to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the distribution network. + Prepare and oversee the preparation of construction design documents, including plans and profiles, structure loading calculations, design details, trench and conduit drawings, and equipment specifications. + Communicate with clients and engineers to clarify system requirements and identify required Right of Way for proposed equipment and facilities. + Acquire field data as needed and collaborate with field surveying teams to develop accurate and constructible designs. + Promote and conduct quality reviews of designs to ensure compliance with design standards, safety requirements, and good industry practices. + Mentor and support less experienced designers by providing technical guidance and feedback. + Check and validate project drawings, including those produced by peers and subordinates, to ensure accuracy and completeness. + Act as a subject matter expert for distribution design and provide expert input on design and construction approaches. Essential Skills + Minimum of five years of experience in the design of electric utility distribution systems within a consulting or utility environment, with responsibility for delivering complete design and construction packages. + At least five years of electrical design experience using MicroStation. + At least five years of electrical design experience using AutoCAD. + At least five years of experience using a distribution design software or PLS-CADD and/or PLS-Pole. + Ability to design overhead and underground electric distribution systems from 4 kV through 69 kV. + Strong proficiency in preparing design sketches, drawings, cost estimates, bills of material, and construction documentation. + Demonstrated ability to perform distribution system design calculations. + Proficiency in preparing plans and profiles, structure loadings, design details, trench and conduit drawings, and equipment specifications. + Ability to interpret and apply standards, guidelines, specifications, practices, procedures, and industry standards for electric distribution design. + Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with clients, engineers, and field personnel. + Ability to conduct thorough quality reviews of design work and ensure compliance with safety and design standards. + Experience checking and validating drawings for accuracy and completeness. + Ability to mentor and guide less experienced designers. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer-aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. + Experience working with utilities and power distribution projects. + Familiarity with overhead and underground design practices for electric distribution systems. + Experience working as a subject matter expert in distribution design. + Strong attention to detail and commitment to design quality and safety. + Ability to identify project risks related to schedule and costs and to propose design and construction improvements. Work Environment This position offers a remote work environment, allowing the Distribution Designer to perform design and documentation tasks from a home or off-site office setting. Work is primarily computer-based, using tools such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, and distribution design software including PLS-CADD and PLS-Pole. The role involves regular collaboration with engineers, clients, and field personnel through virtual meetings, calls, and digital communication. Occasional field data collection or coordination with surveying teams may be required, which can involve site visits to distribution facilities. The work focuses on delivering high-quality design packages in a professional, project-driven environment with attention to schedule, budget, and safety. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Phoenix, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.
