Job Title:
Engineering Supervisor Job Description The Engineering Supervisor leads the day-to-day operations of a Substation Engineering department, overseeing project budgets and schedules while ensuring high-quality design standards. This role provides both technical and non-technical leadership to Leads and individual contributors, serving as the primary liaison between internal teams and the customer. The Engineering Supervisor is responsible for driving efficient workflows, supporting business growth, and ensuring successful execution of protection and control systems projects for electric substations. Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and training in Substation Engineering, with a focus on protection and control systems, and deliver one-on-one mentorship and coaching to Leads. Establish, monitor, and maintain quality control standards for design services and deliverables to ensure consistency, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards. Monitor and maintain project budgets and schedules for all projects and workflows using designated systems and procedures, ensuring work stays on track and within scope. Develop and/or review conceptual project scopes, clearly communicate scope to multiple stakeholders, and prepare cost estimates for projects. Hold teams accountable to project estimates, schedules, and customer deadlines, and ensure change orders are issued promptly when appropriate and necessary. Directly manage Leads and individual contributors in the department, providing guidance, feedback, and support to help them meet performance expectations. Collaborate with internal Leads and the customer to refine and drive business processes, ensuring workflow and workload are efficient and effective. Complete written technical performance reports and deliver periodic presentations to management and teams on project status, budgets, and overall performance. Determine customer needs and work closely with both the customer and internal team to ensure processes run smoothly and expectations are met. Distribute workflow from the customer to internal Leads and ensure all projects are properly filtered, assigned, and managed through the Supervisor. Serve as the primary liaison with the customer to address problems and inefficiencies, fostering strong relationships and clear communication. Resolve issues related to invoicing, resourcing, and staffing, ensuring that project and departmental needs are adequately supported. Work out resolutions to disagreements between the customer and internal team regarding processes, technical issues, and project execution. Proactively address personnel issues, including hiring, termination, promotions, demotions, attendance matters, scheduling, and performance reviews. Utilize Microsoft Office and customer-specific software and applications to complete reporting, tracking, analysis, and documentation tasks. Supervise the work of the project team and take responsibility for hiring, termination, promotion, demotion, coaching, performance evaluations, and employee relations. Drive training and development of team members through Leads, ensuring ongoing skill development and professional growth within the department. Essential Skills Extensive technical knowledge of Substation Engineering, including protection and control systems, relay settings, one-line diagrams, fault studies, and fault analysis. 10+ years of experience engineering and managing electric substation protection and control systems projects. 4+ years of experience leading or supervising a technical design or engineering team. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Professional Engineering (PE) license, or the ability and willingness to obtain a PE license within an agreed timeframe. Demonstrated experience in engineering supervision and engineering management within utilities or utility services environments. Strong ability to establish and maintain quality control standards for engineering design services and products. Proven capability to manage project budgets, schedules, and workflows using formal systems and procedures. Ability to prepare and review conceptual project scopes and cost estimates, and communicate them clearly to stakeholders. Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor Leads and individual contributors, provide constructive feedback, and drive team performance. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and use customer-specific software and applications. Excellent communication skills for preparing technical performance reports and delivering presentations to management and teams. Strong problem-solving skills to address issues related to invoicing, resourcing, staffing, and process inefficiencies. Ability to serve as an effective liaison between customers and internal teams, resolving conflicts and aligning expectations. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a utility, utility services, or related engineering environment focused on substations and protection and control. Experience in managing multiple concurrent projects and workflows in a structured engineering office setting. Experience driving continuous improvement in business processes and workflow efficiency. Demonstrated ability to handle personnel matters such as hiring, performance management, promotions, and employee development. Comfort working with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to align project objectives and deliverables. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, reporting, and project tracking. Interest in ongoing professional development and staying current with industry standards and best practices in substation engineering and protection and control. Work Environment The role is based in a professional engineering office environment that is generally quiet and conducive to focused technical work. Engineers typically share an office with another engineer, encouraging collaboration and regular interaction. The dress code is business casual. The team culture emphasizes frequent teamwork, knowledge sharing, and mutual support to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. Work is performed using standard office technology, Microsoft Office, and customer-specific software and applications, with a strong focus on structured processes and consistent communication. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Tulsa, OK. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50.07 - $70.10/hr.
