Job Description

Our client is seeking a Head of Construction to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight across their heavy civil construction portfolio in Northern California. This is a fully remote opportunity, offering complete flexibility, with the option to work from their Pleasant Hill office whenever desired. The only required in‑person component of this role is occasional travel to active project sites throughout the region.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished construction executive with deep experience in heavy civil infrastructure work and a strong track record of leading teams, optimizing operations, and delivering complex projects safely, on schedule, and on budget.

Key ResponsibilitiesProvide executive-level leadership and oversight for all heavy civil construction operations, ensuring alignment with company goals, safety standards, and project performance expectations.

Direct and mentor project teams, including Project Managers, Superintendents, and support staff, fostering a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.

Develop and execute operational strategies to enhance efficiency, productivity, and profitability across all projects.

Oversee planning, scheduling, cost control, risk management, and resource allocation for multiple concurrent projects.

Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, subcontractors, and key stakeholders.

Review and approve project budgets, change orders, and major contractual obligations.

Implement best practices for quality control, safety, and compliance across the organization.

Conduct occasional in‑person jobsite visits to monitor performance, support field leadership, and ensure project objectives are met.

Collaborate closely with senior leadership to support business development, long-term planning, and organizational strategy.

Qualifications20+ years of heavy civil construction experience, including work in one or more of the following sectors:

Heavy road/highway constructionPaving and gradingUnderground utilities (wet and dry)Experience in a high mid‑management or executive-level role, such as:

Area ManagerOperations ManagerProject ExecutiveProject DirectorDemonstrated success in leading large teams and managing multi‑million‑dollar civil infrastructure projects.

Strong operational mindset with expertise in project controls, risk mitigation, and process optimization.

Excellent leadership, communication, and decision‑making skills.

Ability to thrive in a remote leadership role while maintaining strong visibility and influence across distributed project teams.

Must be based in or able to reliably serve the East Bay region of California and travel to Northern California jobsites as necessary.
