FLSA Classification Non-Exempt Job Description:
Orbital Engineering, Inc. is currently seeking a remote part-time Principal Engineer role to represent the pinnacle of technical leadership within the organization. This position is responsible for overseeing the most complex and high-profile projects, shaping the organization's strategic direction, and serving as a technical authority in the natural gas industry. It requires exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and a vision for innovation and continuous improvement.
THIS IS A PART-TIME ROLE, AVERAGING AROUND 20 HOURS / WEEK.
Essential Functions Strategic Leadership:
Drive the strategic direction of engineering practices, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and industry advancements. Lead the organization's most complex, multi-discipline projects, ensuring high-quality deliverables and successful outcomes. Develop and execute innovative solutions to address industry challenges and improve efficiency and safety.
Technical Authority:
Serve as the organization's top technical expert, providing guidance on engineering calculations, designs, and specifications for critical projects. Oversee and certify designs and drawings, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, including: 49 CFR Part 192: Federal safety standards for natural gas pipelines.

Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems.
ASME B31
General pressure piping standards. Other applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Establish and maintain the organization's engineering standards, workflows, and quality assurance processes.
Mentorship and Team Development:
Act as a mentor and advisor to engineers at all levels, fostering technical skill development and career growth. Lead training initiatives to ensure the engineering team remains at the forefront of industry practices and technology. Provide strategic guidance to senior engineering leaders to enhance organizational performance.
Client and Industry Engagement:
Represent the organization as a thought leader in industry forums, conferences, and client meetings. Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients, stakeholders, and industry partners, driving business growth and innovation. Provide technical support for business development efforts, including high-level client presentations and proposal development.
Organizational Contributions:
Contribute to the development of organizational policies, processes, and strategic initiatives. Lead efforts to integrate emerging technologies and best practices into engineering operations. Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability across the organization. Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline required; Master's degree preferred. 25+ years of experience in engineering, with a proven track record of leadership in large-scale and high-profile projects. Exceptional strategic thinking, leadership, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Comprehensive knowledge of natural gas distribution systems, including pipelines, compressor stations, and pressure control systems. Extensive experience with regulatory compliance, permitting processes, and industry standards in the natural gas sector. Demonstrated success in influencing industry practices and driving innovation.
Work Environment:
This role may require occasional site visits to oversee project execution, engage with clients, and address technical challenges. Exposure to industrial and utility environments, requiring adherence to safety protocols and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Location Note:
This is a remote position. Compensation is based on market data and internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate's location.
Salary Range:
This is a non-exempt hourly role, with expected hourly rate to be between $85-100 per hour (based on experience, qualifications, and location)
