Job Description The Structures Group Manager is primarily responsible for (1) Group Management and Development, (2) Project and Client Management, and (3) Structures Group Business Development. You will work collaboratively with a team of professionals and administrative support staff who are charged and empowered to help you succeed.
Typical duties are as follows:
Group Management and Development:
- Lead, manage, and supervise all structural design services for projects related to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), PA Turnpike, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and other clients both in a prime and subconsultant role.
- Supervise and train bridge engineers and technical staff to develop overall group expertise and depth.
- Manage, monitor, and communicate task deliverables (plans, specifications, and estimates), schedules, and task budgets status.
- Track workload projections and identify future staffing needs. Coordinate staffing needs with other Managers to meet overall workload demands.
- Provide quality control oversight and reviews for structural designs; guide and direct staff to complete all structural design accurately and within budget.
- Seal structural designs.
- Coordinate design elements with others both internally and externally.
- Conduct performance reviews for the Structures Group, execute constructive performance feedback loop processes, and develop a group culture that inspires positive performance and frequent/seamless communications.
- Interview and hire staff for your Group.
Project and Client Management:
- Serve as Project Manager (PM) in both prime and sub consultant role, both structure-focused and other discipline-focused as needed. Lead and/or attend meetings to aid project progress and collaboration. Monitor and maintain that schedules, scope, and budget remain on track in accordance with client expectations.
- Scope projects and develop technical and price proposals.
- Develop client relationships that will build their confidence in our structural services capabilities and ultimately facilitate expanded client work opportunities.
Reinforce Susquehanna Civil's established positive reputation through interactions and high-quality services.
Structures Group Business Development:
Susquehanna Civil has a Business Development (BD) Group with staffing, resources and established processes to facilitate business development endeavors.
- Provide key input and work with the BD Group to identify, plan and pursue strategic opportunities.
- Lead or assist Statements-of-Interest preparation.
- Conduct targeted outreach meetings with current or potential clients that align with strategic goals of the Structures Group and Susquehanna Civil.
- Attend Industry Association events to represent Susquehanna Civil, expand pursuit teaming opportunities and stay abreast of industry topics.

PennDOT Transportation Infrastructure Design Project Experience required.
- Strong understanding of concrete and steel bridge design, retaining wall design, culvert design, including knowledge of proprietary design elements suitable for bridge or retaining wall applications. A thorough knowledge of PennDOT Design Manuals and Standards is also required.
- Expert-level knowledge of fundamental engineering-related mathematical disciplines, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
- Ability to exhibit strong problem-solving skills as a means of ensuring the constructability of design projects as well as meeting schedules.
- Excellent communication and listening skills, both oral and written; will be expected to represent Susquehanna Civil at external meetings and communicate complex issues and topics clearly to a range of audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and foster teamwork within the group dynamic as well as with various other groups within the organization.
- Required to be continuously self-motivated and responsive to both internal and external clients with limited oversight from supervisor/management.
- Possess excellent judgment regarding structural design decisions as well as the ability to assess staff competencies.
- Proven ability to organize and motivate team members in the production of required structural design deliverables.
- Ability to monitor multiple projects as needed for the group regarding schedule and budget.
- Ability to communicate the budget and status of projects and identify solutions to project or budget challenges.
- Familiarity with PennDOT structural staff and digital delivery systems is a plus.
