Job Description

Substation Designer Overview This opportunity is with a nationally recognized, employee-owned engineering firm known for delivering large-scale power delivery projects across the U.S. They're looking to bring on an experienced Substation Designer, with a clear path to long-term stability and career growth. You'll play a key role in supporting high-impact substation projects—working closely with engineers and construction teams to deliver detailed, high-quality physical designs that support grid reliability and modernization. Why This Role Stands Out Employee-focused culture: Ownership mindset where designers play a critical role in overall project success Industry leader: Known for delivering complex, large-scale substation and transmission projects Advanced tools: Work within a 3D/BIM-driven design environment (AutoCAD, Inventor/SDS, MicroStation) Career growth: Opportunities to grow technically and advance within a large, multi-office organization What You'll Be Doing Develop and review physical substation design deliverables including layouts, sections, elevations, and general arrangements Interpret engineering inputs and apply sound technical judgment to design execution Ensure compliance with industry codes, utility standards, and project requirements Create and work within intelligent 3D models to improve accuracy and constructability Perform material takeoffs, quantity estimates, and basic physical design calculations Provide guidance on design standards, workflows, and documentation practices Mentor junior designers and help resolve more complex design challenges Collaborate with engineering, construction, and project teams from design through build What They're Looking For Strong experience in physical substation design within power delivery Proficiency in AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor/SDS, and/or MicroStation Experience producing layouts, equipment arrangements, sections, and elevations Understanding of physical design calculations and substation design standards Ability to work cross-functionally and support projects through construction Education & Experience Associate or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or related field (preferred) 8+ years of relevant substation or power delivery design experience Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Overland Park, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
