H2C leads the nation's largest and most complex radioactive waste cleanup, including closure of the legacy waste tanks at Hanford containing 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste. The Process Technology & Innovation (PT&I) Engineering Manager candidate provides overall leadership, technical authority, and management oversight for a high performing team of engineers and scientists that evaluate, devise, execute and implement new technical and programmatic options that have the potential to improve the effectiveness of and mitigate risks for Hanford's most challenging tasks. PT&I scope includes technology development projects across multiple aspects of the tank waste mission including waste retrieval, tank inspection, sampling, waste form maturation, filtration, ion exchange, evaporation, vitrification, grout stabilization, and may range from laboratory bench scale to engineering/field scale demonstrations. This work requires the ability to establish, lead, and perform in multi-discipline cross-functional teams to conduct technology maturation activities, analyze and interpret results of testing, and manage product deliverables from technology provider laboratories. This role requires sufficient technical credibility and experience to act as an 'intelligent customer' for H2C in interaction with outside research bodies such as national laboratories, universities, research institutes and other technology providers. In addition, a successful candidate will advise and influence DOE and H2C senior management on strategies for effectively managing waste at Hanford and coordinate technical and programmatic aspects with multiple internal and external organizations including DOE/HFO, DNFSB, Washington State Department of Ecology, etc. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Management of Engineering Staff Provide day to day leadership, direction, and mentorship for PT&I engineering personnel, ensuring clear roles, expectations, and providing performance guidance Make engineering staff assignments and support career development Ensure engineering personnel maintain required qualifications Maintain and update engineering execution baselines (scope, schedule, budget) aligned to the ITDC mission Conduct management observations, assessments, and readiness reviews as required Provide technical and programmatic solutions that enhance the efficiency of the RPP mission Perform technology assessments, evaluations, and alternatives analyses Conceive, develop and manage technology development programs that address specific needs and requirements Identify, select, and manage technology and research providers, e.g. national labs and lab teams Lead and provide technical oversight of subcontractor performance and deliverables Manage technology development programs using EVMS principles to ensure timely delivery of products and value for money Perform in-depth technical reviews of laboratory and technology provider deliverables Participate on task specific issue resolution teams to mitigate mission risk and enhance mission efficiency Support technical issue resolution with external regulatory and stakeholder organizations Provide technical input to engineering evaluation studies that support RPP mission objectives Required Qualifications Grade 20: B.S. in Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 8 years of experience including demonstrated experience managing technology development project or activities. Grade 21: B.S. in Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 10 years of experience including demonstrated experience managing technology development project or activities Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased. Grade 22: B.S. in Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 12 years of experience including demonstrated experience managing technology development project or activities Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased. Desired Qualifications Preferred experience within the nuclear industry (commercial, international, or DOE) Advanced technical degree preferred to ensure an understanding of scientific and applied research. Experience in technology evaluations, cost/benefit studies, risk management, or flow sheet development desired. Hanford or Department of Energy experience preferred (or a similar environment). Compensation & Benefits In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
