Job Description
Senior Environmental EngineerPosition OverviewWe are seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer to lead environmental permitting, compliance, and remediation projects. The role focuses on RCRA regulatory oversight, permit writing, environmental engineering design, and technical leadership across site characterization, remedial action implementation, and compliance programs. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with project management and regulator/stakeholder coordination skills to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.
Key ResponsibilitiesLead and prepare complex environmental permit applications and renewals (RCRA, NPDES, Clean Air, Stormwater/MS4, SPCC, CUPA and state permits) and respond to regulator comments.
Manage RCRA compliance programs including hazardous waste characterization, manifesting, storage, training, and corrective action support.
Develop and oversee site characterization, sampling programs (soil, groundwater, air), and QA/QC/chain-of-custody procedures.
Design and implement remediation systems (pump-and-treat, soil vapor extraction, in-situ chemical oxidation, bioremediation) and prepare remedial action workplans and reports (Phase
Prepare technical reports, permit narratives, environmental impact assessments (EIA/NEPA), and clear regulatory submittals and responses.
Conduct environmental compliance audits, inspections, and corrective action plans; maintain documentation for EPA and state agency reviews.
Lead air quality tasks including emissions inventories, AERMOD modeling, PM/VOC monitoring, and indoor air/vapor intrusion assessments.
Develop stormwater management plans, SWPPPs, erosion and sediment control plans, and construction BMPs.
Coordinate with clients, regulators (EPA, state agencies, SCAQMD, Cal EPA), contractors, and stakeholders; serve as primary point of contact during permitting and enforcement actions.
Manage project budgets, schedules, scope, and subcontractors; prepare cost estimates and staffing plans.
Oversee analytical data review (GC-MS, ICP-MS, HPLC) and advanced data analysis (EQuIS, Excel, Python, R, Matlab) to support decision making.
Support landfill design/management, hazardous waste management and spill response planning, including
Mentor junior staff, review technical work products, and foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
QualificationsMinimum 5+ years of progressive experience in environmental engineering with demonstrated leadership on permitting, compliance, and remediation projects.
Proven experience with RCRA requirements and hazardous waste management.
Demonstrated permit writing experience (RCRA, NPDES, Clean Air, Stormwater, SPCC, CUPA or equivalent).Strong technical background in site characterization, Phase
Hands-on experience with groundwater hydrology and modeling (MODFLOW, MT3D) and fate and transport analyses.
Familiarity with EPA regulations, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, CERCLA/Superfund, NEPA and state regulatory frameworks.
Experience with environmental sampling programs and QA/QC, and familiarity with analytical methods (GC-MS, ICP-MS, HPLC).Proficiency with GIS (Arc
Knowledge of stormwater management, SWPPP development, erosion and sediment control, and construction BMPs.
Experience in waste characterization, landfill design/management, and hazardous waste disposal logistics.
Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills; experience preparing regulatory submittals and technical reports.
Project management skills with experience managing budgets, schedules, subcontractors, and client/regulator interactions; PMP is a plus.
Certifications such as 40hour
Ability to perform field work, travel to sites, and lift/move sampling equipment as needed.
Bachelors degree in Environmental Engineering or similar.
